A story about Pot Noodles.......
I once spent a year working as a lab technician for the Cancer Research Unit in Newcastle's Medical school.
We were in the rest area one lunch time and I got out a Pot Noodle to make.
At least 5 or 6 of the researchers (most of them docs etc) looked at me like I was mad and said "you're not going to eat THAT are you?"
I thought they were joking until one of them went over to the counter and bought me a sandwich - gave it to me and said "much safer luv"
:eek :eek :eek
I've never eaten another one from that day to this.
:uhoh

Sorry another pot noodle story...............
I once mentioned to Peter that I have never ever eaten a pot noodle. So he bought me one for my christmas. I still have never ever eaten a pot noodle, it sat in the cupboard until it was out of date.
After Carole's story I am glad I did not eat it.

Lee & Perrins is toxic..?? OH NOOOOOOOOO I can't live without it

S'ok Moorf, its not all toxic, big food scare over here about a batch of worcester sauce having cancerous die in it, and its not even the Lea and Perrins brand. Its amazing how many products it gets into!
But you are safe....... Enjoy your cheese on toast.....

Moorf, the official list is available at the following link:
www.food.gov.uk/sudanlist
It is mostly processed ready meal type stuff (crap to paraphrase Diny!)
and came from an affected batch of Worcester Sauce. Doesn't bother us coz we don't eat that stuff anyway...
Happy reading!

We've noticed that some of the brands we know taste different over here... e.g. Sultana Bran (Kellogs but with no flavour over here.. although we are getting used to it), Baked Beans under the brand Watties but made by Heinz taste different to Heinz in the UK, although you can get 'normal' Heinz beans here too, and Heinz tomato kethup (Terry thinks it tastes different, I can't tell!).
One thing you can't get in the UK that you can get here though is L&P! It's a fizzy drink that tastes like lemon sherbet and we're addicted to it! :cheers

The Oak brand of baked beans taste great - more like Heinz.. but better!! Less sugar I think....

Ooh, thanks Moorf, will have to try those. Always avoided them because they look a bit old fashioned! It's so hard to know what's a bargain and what's just cheap when you don't recognise the brands!!

So true Sophie.. if it wasn't for a tip off from someone else (Tanya I think!) I probably wouldn't have picked them up either!!

Baked Beans under the brand Watties but made by Heinz....
Watties was a New Zealand company that got bought out by Heinz about 10 years ago, or thereabouts. Watties made baked beans long before the Heinz takeover, and they still taste the same as they did then too. Oak baked beans are/were made in the same factory - just a different brand, less beans, and a milder flavour.

for bad hair days there is nothing better than kerastase and we've tried just about every big product out there. it costs the earth but saves your soul. we stayed with it after a family aveda session that left us all with severe dandruff. even k took 2-3 months to normalise again.
as for bad food stuffs - when i made my first major spag sauce in nz (the really time-consuming kind) i threw in as final flourish what i believe to be sieved tomotoes only to find it was ketchup. it tasted vile. love those labels.

Pam's tomato Ketchup is a close second to Heinz if you can't get the real deal.
And Watties.......anyone else think there's a huge clove flavour going on there>? I found it really off-putting & started buying Pam's beans too...almost identical to Heinz again.
.......
While we're sort of on the subject, I really like that Leggo or Watties tomato puree in a tin too...the runny stuff, more like passata really. Great for pizza sauce or pasta.

Spot on with the clove flavouring of Watties tomato ketchup. Don't know about putting it on my chips but it'll come in handy when the kids have a toothache.
In fact .... I'm well chuffed that somebody else out there identified the strong 'under flavour' as cloves. Tried to explain it to a few folks and they just look at me kind of blank :eek

As far as I'm aware the Pam's range was the own brand product of the Four Square chain of shops, & developed so they could compete on an equal footing with the big guys.
I doubt very much that Pam ever existed :)

Taken from Pams Website:
Unfortunately the origin of the name Pam's is unrecorded, though legend has it that it is an acronym of the names of two early Foodstuffs senior executives!

My biggest problem her woith shopping is that I have had to go back to reading labels. They do not have the same ideas here on 'helathy 'food. They use loads of colouring that I will not buy in foods, loads of salt and far too much sugar. Don't but anything from Watties expecting it to taste like Heinz, except fruit in fruit juice.
They seem to put salt in everything here and in much larger quantities than I was used to in UK. In most things NZ is years behind UK so I suppose in 10 years time there will be a major campaign to get manufacturers to reduce salt content an to make the public aware of the dangers of salt in their diets.
