Hi guys, We have been reading about a new place north of Christchurch being built called Pegasus town, it looks great, has alot of amenities and things going on.
We originally wanted to buy a lifestyle block in Christchurch and are still very tempted by that, but were just wondering does anyone know if people outside the pegasus can use the amenities in pegasus or will it be just for the residents.
Thanks in advance
Rache

We had a conversation about this new town with one of the reps, trying to hire staff to work there, at the Olympia event earlier this year. It was a nice looking development (if you can afford it) and we did get out of the guy that most of the staff who they are looking for would not actually be able to afford to live there, hairdresses, ground staff etc. So would guess that at least some outsiders would have access to the place. Likely Only they could tell you how much access.

It took some digging, but the FAQ did have an answer:

How will the developer stop people coming from other areas and using all the facilities (e.g. the lake) but not paying towards the maintenance?

Infinity believes many people will come from Christchurch and the surrounding communities to use the facilities at Pegasus and all at Pegasus will welcome our visitors. They will help to pay for some of the facilities that we all enjoy. There will be charges for some of these facilities, which the visitors will pay and residents of Pegasus will probably get special prices as one would expect.

A lot of debate going on locally about this 'new town' and the link from Ben is a good one :nice1 Might also be worth looking up Northern Outlook newspaper and some other local rags. The impact of this development is going to be fairly far reaching for the area or maybe if/when property prices settle...

I think if you were originally looking at a lifestyle plot then I'd struggle to see the attraction but of course that's a very personal point of view :)

Thanks guys for your responses,
I think the lifestyle block is still our preference, the pegasus town does however look inviting with all it can offer. But no real point in paying the premium to live there, on a much smaller block if you can live outside and use the facilities anyway.
Where would be a good place in that area to buy a lifestlye block with access to good schools?

In my very humble opinion the words "touch" and "bargepole" come to mind when I think of Pegasus... think about years of living in a growing construction zone (many people who have bought plots there now can't afford to build so lots of empty plots, half builds and foundations).

Having said that, Pegasus is my personal vision of hell.... so I could be biased...

Thanks, construction site living isnt exactly what we had in mind!!! Good tip thanks.
Just out of interest do any of you guys out there think the deveopment will have an effect on house prices in the surrounding areas?

There is a lot of debate about it locally I have to say and thinking seems to lean towards prices going down but in this market who knows.... We're ever hopeful as still renting for a good while yet :)

Well I drove around there the other day and I didn't see any of the features mentioned on their website. I saw a muddy building site with a few half build houses. In the current climate it would not be at all surprising to see some/all of the amenities dropped or scaled back. Last summer the site was so dusty that they were using helicopters to drop water because the residents in the local (real) town complained so much. The expansion they are planning will go on for a good many years. The beach looks lovely in the pictures, and it really is absolutely stunning BUT there is nearly always a cool/cold on-shore easterly blowing.

Morph's words about bargepoles are wise IMO
