May have been asked before, but has or does anyone buy there wine on a monthly basis from a winery? If so do you know the difference in price
ie: is it cheaper?
Don't want to appear to be a alcoholic but one needs to get their priorities right.

Hello Sue,
Nice to see you on the forum!!!!
We haven't done the winery thing yet but I do believ they are fab. there are food and wine festivals during the summer which apparently are great.
You can get masses of wines in the supermarkets here - whole isles dedicated to wines - spiolt for choice!
Off topic, saw your hubby last weekish - looks fine and doing exceptionally well! missing you and John though!
You know where I am if you need anything - can't pop round for a coffee but maybe could help with some NZ stuff!
Love

Hiya Linda,
Thanks for the response, and the support.
Now then how did I know that somehow you would have checked out the wine bit :laugh Oh yes I think it was when I last saw you before you left us, your mouth was a bit red from all that ruby wine (only jokin)
there's nothing like a good bottle to help you through the day.
John said he had met and spoken to you and Ali, it as helped him I think knowing yourself plus other people from the forum and being able to meet up with a lot of you.
Yes I think he's done brill in the short space of time he's been there, and the millage he's done :eek 3000 miles not Kilo'm but MILES!!! that's one bit of traveling
I can't beleive it's all finally happening it's been a crazy 18 month's, brick wall after brick wall. Just need to sell the house now, which i realise from what I have seen on the forum is going to be a pretty stressful time, but it will all be worth it so I don't mind the wait.
Everyone who as seen John say's he seem's really happy and at home in NZ which is good coz that is one small part of the journey answered for him. :cool
Anyway up I'm goin finishin me wine of before I hit the sack as we say here in wigan.
Speak to you soon, your a star
Love
Sue

On the basis on extensive and very focused research (though definitely less focused as the day went on), I can conclusively say that nope, wine is no cheaper at the wineries here in NZ. Several reasons for that:
A lot of NZ wines go straight overseas - a lot goes to North America, and there is one winery in hawkes bay that exports all its produce direct to Tokyo...
Production levels here are 'boutique' compared to e.g. Europe, so they have no need to sell at reduced prices anywhere...
NZ wine tends to be pretty damn good these days and certainly market themselves as a high quality brand, and winemakers have no desire to diminish their brand by selling cheaply anywhere...
Cheapest wine tends to be special offers in Pak n Save - they have a good range of both Oz and NZ, especially the big names, and buy in enough bulk to pass some savings on...
Having said that, the wineries are well worth a visit, and there is something nice about buying it after a wee tour and tasting - it's not generally marked up or anything. The wineries are also good for finding the more unusual / prestige wines that the supermarkets / bottle shops don't stock. If you like aromatic whites, Askerne outside Havelock North is an example of one place that sells all its wine cellar door or mail order (very ocassionally local shops).
hope that helps - al i the name of research... (hic!)

11 yrs ago, before the world knew about nz wines, we did wine trail near napier. it was so good we did 2 days - and me a tour hater. had some lovely wines, and an exended tasting with alwyn (???) corban, owner, of gnatarwa (???) stables and son of the big corbans wines founder - v nice wine, lovely man, beautiful place. fab day out.
imagine now that everyone knows nz wine situ has changed a lot. back then they were producing some fantastic stuff that never even left the shores of nz. i love making drinks and all the fruit wines etc were a real eye opener. someone made an irish cream that was world no.1 but couldn't produce enough for export! sigh.

Leslie - my hubby used to make his own Irish cream when he lived in NZ. Recipe - 1.5 cups of whiskey, 3/4 can condensed milk, 4 heaped teaspoons of coffee, fill up Baileys bottle with milk and shake. I just asked him for this and it was quite scarey that he was able to tell me off the top of his head (he's been out of NZ for 12 years) :laugh Recommended sitting time = 6 weeks. BUT drinkable after 1 DAY. :laugh :laugh :laugh Seemingly, some recipes call for eggs but that can't be kept for very long, and that wouldn't have done at all.
