Urgent! NZ coffee

ok, this is a bit silly, but how does one order a plain black cup of coffee in NZ?
My husband needs his coffee and keeps getting blank looks when he asks for a coffee. Baristas want to know what kind. So far he has tried a flat white (didn't like that), a short black (espresso), long black (maybe espresso with water?) and Americano. Americano seems to be closest, but does anyone have any tips on how to order a plain black filter coffee?
How about a black coffee with a shot of espresso?
Tips on coffee much appreciated!

I always thought Americano was just that....
You can order long and short espresso usually, the former may be pretty close to what you're after.
Ah, yeah, that's it. A long black. Which is also a beer :D

Yes, I was told it's an "Americano" - not filtered thru a drip filter but a shot of espresso with added water. :no
I just enjoyed a daily cappuchino (sp?) instead!

It's just called filter coffee here, but I'm not sure it's widely available. The couple times I've seen a American-type coffee machine and ordered filter coffee, people look at me a little quizzically, like why would you want that? :)
At Starbucks, the equivalent to espresso and water is an Americano, so you could try that.

As sweetpea said, filter coffee does not really exist much here. Plunger coffee is available in some cafes but it is rare and it is about the closest you will find. Coffee here is basically espresso based unless you are at work or someones home where generally plunger (french press) coffee is the norm.
Even buying a US style coffee maker here is difficult, I bought one it was OK and I broke the glass pot and could not easily get another. Bought an espresso machine (which I prefer anyways but was lazy) after that and have not gone back. For me it was an easy switch and I have found I now actively dislike what I used to think was good coffee. Hopefully your husband will adjust!

Yeah, asking for filter coffee gets some strange looks. Well, so far he is making do with Americano from shops.
Press coffee would probably be fine as well. Will have to wait until we get settled so he can have his coffee how he likes, and in the amount he likes. :D
Lucky for me I don't like coffee. :p
Thanks all.

Good luck, even Dunkin Donuts here doesn't do filtered coffee. Americano or Long Black are the closest you will get. Funny, I work week-ends at a coffee shop and I always joke about how an American would look at the flat white and ask "What the hell is this? I asked for a regular coffee!" It's wierd how that just doesn't exist commercially in NZ.
