Hi,
I've been trying to think of a way to describe Auckland to people in terms of population and land area. I want to say something like the following
" Auckland has the same population as ***** but spread over the same size as ****"
I just need 2 UK cities in insert in the spaces. Any suggestions?

It is really hard to sum it up, isn't it? It is rare that you can see any city spread out in all it's glory and the orientation of all the bays and inlets makes it so hard to imagine without visiting. I have heard it said that Auckland is twice the size of London - which seems totally unbelievable but may be true if you take the measurements from the extremes. I'm not sure if they mean London and all it's suburbs either. Even if it is twice as big as London (population 11 million) that means there's one hell of a lot more space in Auckland for it's 1.2 million inhabitants.
Just to share a laugh at someone elses expense - I met someone on holiday once who said that the fence around the M25 was to stop people driving slowly as they look at London. :laugh Another asked me where the main road in London was.

I would have thought that Manchester has more than 1 million residents, which is the aprox. pop. of Auckland.
Hmmm. I just did a quick search, and it seems that Manchester only has aprox. 400, 000 population.

Dont apologise Millimoo, I went back and did a quick edit, so my fault.
Anyways. Does Auckland feel like it has twice the population of Manchester. The answer to that one should give some perspective (to those that know Manchester ).

ahhhhhhhhh me thought I'd had too much of the vino tinto
I've always had this impession tha Manchester was HUGE, but there's more people here in Edinburgh. I guess it really is down to the lay out and land area.

Manchester isn't that big, but everyone thinks of it as huge because they include all the towns and villages around. For example Salford is often thought of being a suburb of manchester, but its a city in its own right!
So if you take Greater Manchester Area, then maybe...?
cheers

That was my point earlier (sorry posted while logged in as the wife)
Auckland itself only has a population of about 400,000 however if you include the region, (Henderson, North shore city etc etc..) Then you get to about 1.2m, about the same as greater manchester.
