We're about to send off our ITA (later this week), and it just occurred to me, when do NZIS return original documents? I intend to enclose a Special Delivery envelope for their return.
We might need the passports or birth certificates in a few weeks, so not sure whether to get some certified copies (for our own use) just in case ?
Sorry if this has been answered before, I had a quick search to no avail.
Ta,
John.

It will depend on where you submit them, we had ours returned with our Approval in Principle letter one week after submitting them, in Christchurch.

We will be submitting from the UK, to NZIS at London.

Before we submitted our ITA I emailed our Case Officer explaining that I needed my passport back within a month, and whether we should send everything, and if it would be returned within that time. She stated that unless there was anything wrong with our police certs and/or medicals then it shouldnt be a problem. We had AIP after a couple of weeks and everything back less than a week later. It seems to me that you will only fall down at the ITA stage if you cant prove everything stated on your EOI.

Thanks Mike.
So from what you are saying, we won't get our original documents back until after PR has been offered? If I understand correctly in your case it was approx. 3 weeks to getting you documents back.

Does anyone else have a rough timeframe for getting passports & stuff back from NZIS London? :? I'm imagining the worst, but supposing there is some (unforseen) problem with our ITA. Will NZIS hold on to the documents indefinately/until the case is resolved? I would hope that once a case officer had seen original passports etc they would be able to certify the copies I'm gonna enclose and send them back. :hopeso
One other thing (which I saw mentioned in another thread), this 'cover letter' that NZIS ask for - I assumed it was the 1st page of the ITA sent to us detailing names etc. If it isn't, then what exactly do NZIS want written in a letter? I mean, they have our life history in the pack?
Sorry for being so dense,
John :uhoh :uhoh :uhoh

John,

We were told by our case officer that we would get our original documents back once we had paid the migrant levy. This isn't a problem for us as we will be sending our passports in as soon as I'm finished on my current business trip, but seems a bit silly given that some will wait the full 6 months before paying the levy.

With regards to the cover letter I just did a short letter, addressed to my case officer, that said our application was enclosed with copies of relevant docs and that I looked forward to hearing. from him. Not sure if it was correct but we got PR so there couldn't have been much wrong!

Our original documents INCLUDe our passports - so not sure what to do now.

John,

Why not get a certified copy of the passports? Saves sending them off at the beginning. Only cost us £10 to get 3 copies done at a local solicitors office.

Yes, seems like a good idea now. It's just the scrooge in me wanted to avoid paying out unnecesary fees (I'm Cornish). But on balance I think certified copies are the way to go. (Probably  )

So, the next logical question (from the skinflint in me):
Who is the cheapest for certifying copies? (Barring personal solicitor friends who'll do it for a couple of drinks).
Thanks,
John.

Hi, We needed photocopies of passports certifying last week, all we did was to walk into a solicitors office, explained to the receptionist what we wanted doing, she did them there & then (make sure it has'solicitors' on the stamp and you'll be fine) By the way she didn't charge !!!! (she actually phoned up to the solicitors office -he instructed her that she was ok to sign them) Don't forget to take the original document so they can check the details. :nice1
