When you joined your hospital, did you receive any training on Maori language & customs to avoid any cultural misunderstanding?

I'm not a nurse, and not maori, but I have a Maori daughter in law and was very pleasantly surprised at the cultural systems in place in the hospital when she went in for her child birth. a Maori midwife, family support person, also Maori, etc etc, special care taken to deal with the afterbirth in the way that Maori want that done.
So I am sure its very important and I beleive there is lots of training available for hospital workers.

That's really good to hear. In my line of work it can be so easy to cause offense unintentionally. Thanks for the reply.

We had a big online workbook to go through and 2 study days which was very helpful. There are lots of resources you can utilise, the DHB here make it easy for you.

Hi JoJo76

Are you coming to work at Hawkes bay DHB ?

I work there as one of the Booking Co Ordinators for Respiratory and Thyroid outpatients.

We have a Marae onsite and you spend a half day there plus theres another whole days training at a later date - that is for all staff. I know the nurses training is a lot longer so guess you will spend more time concentrating on other parts of the job and maori culture from the ward's perspective.

Hi Sharon and thanks for the info. Yes, hopefully I'll get a job there. I met up with a recruitment type person for medical and they showed be round the hospital. Looks nice.

They seemed to think I wouldn't have a problem getting a job when we arrive next year although I think they thought it would be sooner, so I've been sending emails every so often to let them know where we are in the process.

How are you enjoying Hawkes Bay? I'm addicted to looking at all the lovely houses there. :)

Hi Sharon, would love to meet up:cheers

I'm in renal outpatients Haemodialysis and would prefer to stay in this area but beggars can't be choosers I suppose. They were really nice, weren't too keen on the 12 hour shifts though but hopefully it will have become more popular by the time I get there.

Quite interested in Social Work too, might look into that as a career change.

Thanks ben for the info.
