Ey up,
Newbie here (just posted in introductions).
As I can gather, if you are on a WTR visa it's only possible to apply for permanant residency of you have managed to secure a job that pays over $55,000 (NZ). Although I have'nt come across anything that proves either way, I've been informed that Fitter/Turners earn a maximum of $50,000. Is it a waste of time putting the EOI in if its a non starter?.
Cheers
Lee.

I don't know any answer for you, but I'm sure you'll get some help when the people already in NZ come online later.

Hi Lee,
A Dutch told me he had a WTR as well, because he is an electrician like me. He said with this WTR he need to go to NZ in 3 months time. And he needs to find a job within in 9 months time. If he has a permanent job for over 2 or 3 months (I can't remember exactly) he can apply for a PR. He didnt mention the NZ$55.000,- which is a bit high for a fitter or a skilled worker.

Hi Lee - OH has come out on a WTR talent visa and was required to be earning $50K (this rose in July/August to $55K). We did not go down the EOI route as it's not necessary if you get a WTR. You can only get a WTR visa by securing a job with an accredited employer in the first instance. After 2 years we can apply for PR. We went for a WTR Talent visa as we didn't have enough points to do any other route.
If you have the right level of points then maybe you don't need to apply for a WTR visa (however I am aware that there are vary types of WTR visa, I'm only going by the Talent route that OH applied for).

Hi Lee,
It sounds like people are talking about two different ways of getting a WTR visa in this thread. The first is if you get a job offer without following any other immigration path and you work with your employer and immigration to get the WTR. The other path is when you fill out an EOI, apply for Permanent Residency and are offered a WTR instead of being granted PR right off the bat. (This is our situation). In our situation, you have 9 months from the time you enter NZ to establish 3 months of 30+ hours per week of work in your skilled area of employment. In this case there is no mention of wages earned, rate of pay or 50,000 anythings to fulfill the 30 hour requirement. Correct me if I'm wrong or if I have forgotten anything but this is my understanding of the WTR procedures. Good luck!

Hi,
I was told during a discussion I had with immigration that you didn't have to be earning 55,000 if your profession was on the skills shortage list.
We were thinking about taking this route. As a relatively junior nurse I would start on about 47,000 in NZ, obviously below 55,000.
I'm sure someone will be along soon with more info. :)

I never understood the salary requirement. For a country that needs experienced people they sure seem to be filtering out those that due to differences in their qualifications and work experience cannot land jobs with such income..yet they do have the skills needed.
and get this... they require only a $35k income to sponsor someone into the country once you're a resident.
mind boggling.
