Hey All,

Finally possible to post my queries here!
Karen n I are in UK since the past 3 years. In our late 20s and Indians by birth but working near London. I am a Senior Software Engineer with 5 yrs exp in J2EE Design and Systems Analysis. Telecoms is my major strength
We have planned for a while now to move to NZ but I was patiently waiting to build on my experience.

Now for the fun part. We qualify for the PR straight away coz of my qualifications and experience. But PR takes close to a year. I also want to do my MBA. Bottom line, we plan to settle in NZ and start our family there :-)

Your honest help on our possibilities out there. My experience with an MBA from Massey Uni should hopefully be ample enough to kick things off? Wellington seems the place for IT professionals right now.
Planning to go to the London Expo on 18th / 19th !!!

Advice, suggestions and anything else is really welcome.
Thanks
Ken

Thanks!
We need it. Its a big thing for us to pack our bags and move out :-)
Planning to invest all our savings into it. In love with NZ, few family members in Brisbane and Adelaide, but NZ has always been a priority.....thanks for the wishes.....have no clue about where to stay and get setup, so the anxiety is there!
To the rest, any suggestions? We r planning to pack up and be there mid 2009, if not earlier than that!!!

Sorry for the double posts, but any pointers on which city we should look for while settling down?
We prefer to be close to the beach or a river...weather wise, prefer the sun at most times, cold weather is fine but would prefer to stay away from major thunderstorm areas.
Also, if we plan to opt for a home, and given our tastes, could anyone give a few possible suburbs? I want to know some names prior to the Expo, just in case the realtors try to pull a quick one on us.

Cheers
Ken

hi ken
we have just moved out to wellington on a business visa after enjoying 2 holidays in nz in the last 2 years. we were lucky in that we all ready have friends who live in wellington so they advised us on "where not" to end up living. can't comment on the work front but as a place wellington is big enough to enjoy and you quickly get a feel for where you are.
if you decide you want further info on suburbs etc let me know and i will send a list over.

Thanks a lot Rick. Recently posted a Query on information about the sub urbs we should be looking at.
If you have list or recent info it would help us a lot in making a decision. I doubt we would come on a visit visa and then try our luck mainly because we have to pack and head out straight away. We live in a rented appt in UK so if we come to NZ on a visit visa we have to wrap things up here.
Fingers crossed for something positive at the expo in London. We are ready to be there end of Jan 2009 if a company is interested :-)
Else we arrive mid 2009 and I will start my Masters. Either ways, any info on places to rent or areas would be useful. We wont have a car as well initially

Cheers

Hi Ken
We found that the quality of rental housing can be generally a lower standard than that in the uk so even if you find an area you like you might have to search pretty hard to find the property you really want to be in. I looked on various rental sites before we came and probably your best bet to get an idea of what’s on offer is to look at trademe.co.nz as it has a lot of private rentals but also the letting agents tend to double up on it as its easy for them to do so. its really hard trying to rent something before you get here (even with the help of people here) due to the time difference and we found the agent/individual require someone to view the property before they will let you rent. in a nutshell the best rental properties go very quickly and usually to someone who can view at short notice.
The suburbs we looked at and liked were - Khandallah, wadestown, kelburn, northland, ngaio, wilto n and petone. Please be aware even within these suburbs you may find small areas that you might chose not to live in and equally there are nice areas within other suburbs that you might be perfectly happy in. I hope this helps, and if you end up coming to wellington and want some assistance in renting just give me a shout.
Cheers Rick

You are a star Rick!!!
This information is again very useful. We have looked at trademe and you are right. The rental prices quoted on there are either double or much more than the average going rates for that area. Will keep the suburbs you mentioned in mind.
Hope all goes well and we meet up in Welly!
Thanks again
Ken
