I'm wondering what bacon is like in NZ? It is like British bacon, meaty and only requires a little cooking or like North American bacon, very fatty and requires nuclear fision to become edible?

What are the egg whites like there? Here they are very gooey, but whenever I'm in the UK I noticed that they are extremely watery.

I'm still not convinced Kiwi Bacon is much cop (i need two peices of toast & marmalade to help with my descision).

Wooba--I had to laugh. I've never heard our bacon described like that. Too true though, so I switched to turkey bacon.

It is a bit rubbish though isn't it!?

Like Ali - the hubby says it doesn't even look like bacon.
UK = fat removed - choice of smoked, unsmoked, back, middle or streaky

MAYBE we have been spoiled for choice eh!

Eggs are all very good quality I've found...even the battery ones.
Bacon..hmmmm, mostly crap but I found some called Beehive, I think, that was nearly as good as UK bacon. It looked like back cuts too, which is rare cos it's usually middle or shoulder here with whopping great rinds on that never crisp up :)

Most vacuum packed bacon from supermarkets is pretty crappy, so you should try getting it from a real butcher shop. Try the Mad Butcher, as he makes most of his own meat products. He has branches in most major towns, as well.

The bacon that is often referred to as the best you can buy here is called Pokeno Bacon. Phone them and ask where their bacon is available:

Pokeno Bacon Company
Mercer Country Stop
State Highway 1,
Mercer, Pukekohe,
South Auckland
0-9-232 6612

As for eggs, try buying the *certified organic* ones, as they are produced by free range chickens, not battery hens. Also, try buying them from the producers, if you live near the country, that is. :cool

Just abit of boring info on the egg front .........

If the whites are thin and runny it means that the egg isn't particularly fresh. As soon as the egg is laid the white, which starts off thick and gooey (to protect the yolk/chick) starts to break down.

The older the egg the runnier the whites. If I crack an egg and the whites spread all over the frying pan I 'fling' it.

Sorry .... let's get back onto subject now.

PROPER English Bacon is without doubt the best I have tasted anywhere. But, do not confuse the real thing with some of the water borne rubbish sold in some supermarkets as bacon.

Does anyone in NZ have experience of eating wild Boar? (PB maybe)
If so, how does it compare?

Diny
10th March 2005, 06:54 AM
Yeah definately PB ......... and me too !!!!!

However, I've not eaten it as bacon, but I have eaten it as a massive ham which had been smoked. It's very nice actually. Kind of 'hammy' but with alot more flavour. It's alot darker meat too, not pinky/white (well, the stuff I had wasn't) :eek

Funny how this thread triggered a craving for bacon and eggs in both me and my husband, and he didn't even read it!

Is wild boar readily available in NZ? I love meats that have real flavor. (elk, moose, and deer were tasty - alligator was unexpectedly bland, though)

Is wild boar readily available in NZ?

If you have a gun and some hunting dogs it is! ;)

Most farmers will let you hunt for wild pigs on their property, if they have them, that is - many do, and you can hunt for them near quite a few towns and cities, as farms are never too far away.
