Does anyone know if it is possible to obtain an IRD number before actually arriving in NZ as a permanent resident?

From looking at this page it does not seem possible as you have to appear in person for some of the steps it outlines.

It is no longer possible to obtain an IRD number without being present in NZ.

You used to be able to do it from abroad, but they stopped allowing this option.

No worries
just fill in the form (download it) put your UK address and they'll send you a little card with number on it.

But don't forget to change your address when you get here or you won't get your tax return forms. And then you won't fill the form in on time. And then you get fined.:o

And then you have to think up a good story about why you didn't change your address. PISD did it for us (Post Immigration Stress Disorder)

You can't get your IRD number from abroad anymore unfortunately.

Used to be able to but the rules changed earlier this year.

It now takes about a week after you apply in person.
