Emergency Backpacks

I'm going to start getting my emergency stuff together.
First I'm going to tackle the emergency backpacks they suggested. This is something you keep by the bed, or near an exit, for each person to grab, also you could keep one in the car. This isn't the main emergency box.
I remember them saying its a good idea to have a change of clothes, torch and first aid in there...
What else?
Cheers

Just been looking up about torches, anyone used one of these:

Are they any good or just a gimmick?

We brought our windup torch from South Africa and found them to be excellent specially when we were having our power cuts. So yes they do work and give off a good light.

There are wind up tourch/radios on sale in Kathmandu at the moment....50% off. We bought two of them about 6 months ago and they are great....one in emergency box and one in the car. Wind up for 2 minutes and you get about 45 minutes radio play, but not sure how long torch would last as not timed it.
We also have 2 mini 'hand action' torches in our bedroom in case of power cut....got them for about $4.99 in the motat museum shop.

I got one of these from a friend when they were being field tested last year, and have to say it is superb. It recharges via a small solar panel in the visor. Not cheap at around $40 but a big saving on batteries.

OK - what is it we're missing over here? I saw your threat about the evacuation, but why are you packing emergency backpacks? What have I not cottoned onto?

Just read through some of the other threads again. Moorf reckoned on about 15000 earthquakes a year in NZ. Does your buildings/house insurance cover earthquake damage then?
OH and I had just moved to Lincoln (England) last year when we were woken up about 1am in the morning with the bed shaking violently. It turned out to be a tremor around 5.3 on the RS with its epicentre about 8 miles south of us. What size of tremors is NZ subject to, generally? What is the largest you've experienced?

Check out Geonet (http://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/) for details on earthquakes in NZ.
You will see that most of the 15000 are very minor indeed, but more worrying is that there are 250+ significant ones.

I always have a bottle of water in my emergency bag, plus extra of the medications I'm on. I wouldn't die without my meds, but for people with certain problems it's a big deal.

There's a national earthquake insurance scheme operated by EQC
Earthquake insurance – EQC
New Zealand is one of the few countries in the world with national government earthquake insurance for homeowners. In 1944, two years after earthquakes seriously affected Wairarapa and Wellington, a national commission was set up to cover damage from war and earthquakes. Cover for landslides, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and hydrothermal activity was added later. In 1993 war damage was excluded and the commission became the Earthquake Commission (EQC). EQC insurance covers homes and their contents up to a specified monetary limit, but not commercial properties or motor vehicles. Homeowners automatically get EQC cover when they buy fire insurance.
EQC maintains a natural disaster fund, invested both in New Zealand and overseas, and buys catastrophe reinsurance. EQC provides core funding for the GeoNet monitoring network, and funds hazard research and public education programmes.
