If we submit all this stuff with my husband's PR application, will they keep it until they make a decision or approve it all? Because that will likely take longer than the 3 months we have before we travel. Then what? I'm thinking of all these worst-case scenarios, and I'm hoping they'll send this stuff back ASAP.

When we handed over all of our documents, we had no plans to travel and so were not going to need our passports. NZIS London kept everything of ours until our final approval.

Of course I can only speak for ourselves, and I'm not sure if this is what normally happens. I know that you can hold onto your passport and submit it later along with the migrant levy.

We submit originals of documents that are not needed in the process period.

For passport, we did certified copies approved by the NZ consulate in Amman since we used to travel back and forth to Iraq.

Okay, so I could somehow certify a copy of his passport instead of sending the actual thing? Good to know. Thank goodness I haven't sent it already.

Our solicitor did certified copies of our passports , free of charge , as we need them for a holiday next week.

Certified copies are fine for your application ....... We submitted certified copies of our passports (done at the Post Office counter in ASDA for a small fee) as we had to submit all our paperwork to NZIS in Wellington NZ due to it being a Long Term Business Visa application. They were fine with that and then when we were granted our visas we had to submit the originals, yet again half way round the world.... thanks to DHL and TNT couriers we got them back with our blue stickers ten days later.
Hope that helps

We got all our documentation back after our approval in principle, however this did not include our passports (as we did not submit them).

Hope this is help!
