We moved house recently to an unfurnished place, and as we brought virtually nothing over from the UK we have had to "start again". I thought I might put on the forum what it has cost so far, just in case anyone was interested.

Brought from Trade me: Frigidaire Fridge $150, in absolute tip top condition, not a thing wrong with it: Childs Disney bed $85, brand new: Small dining table and four chairs £55, again tip top condition, not even scratched: De Loungui(sp) gas fire $65, a few scratches on the top, but in perfect working order. Currently bidding on a Sofa (fingers crossed)

Cut Price Beds: Ok we have bought a $799 sofa bunk bed for my daughter  , but put on layby so she is sleeping on the camp bed at the mo: King size bed (base and Mattress) $300, with 5 brand new complementary pillows thrown in.

K-mart: 6 Queen size bath towels, 2 hand towels, 2 face cloths, 5 T-towels and oven mitt and pot holder $41: King size and single duvet, Covers and pillow cases, valance, sheets and extra pillow cases $112.

The Warehouse: Bargain computer table reduced from $99.99 to $49.99

Plus

Briscoes have a special on blankets and single duvet this week. A single duvet is $11.99, and single air cell blankets $20 (Guess where we will be on Sat)

Hi, we have just registered with the site and are off to NZ in July. We are busy selling everything we have, but are worried about the cost of things for replacement. So your note was really interesting :yes . How long have you been out there, and where abouts are you living? We are going to Palmerston North.... with hubbys job :? :? :?

We have done about as much research as we can on the web etc.. but personal experience seems to count for a lot. Any more info would be great

Hi Vicky

We will have began our adventure a year ago in May, although myself and the kids have only been back for about six months. We are in Christchurch, and havent visited Palmy North yet, so I'll be interested in your observations.

I'll be happy to answer any questions I can, so please feel free to ask.

In answer to the question after your signature, Probably about the same time they stop breathing :laugh :laugh :exit

regarding selling off stuff in the UK. it can work out quite expensive to replace things here when you are setting up. Not too bad if you are happy with second hand though. Otherwise I would recommend that if its any good bring it. The cost of setting up completely again really does mount up. just the little things like staples, string, stationery, clothes airers, pegs, brooms, dustpan and brush etc. (you've got the picture) very soon add up, and its an expense that happens at the same time as buying the car, house, insurance. It seems when you first get here and convert back to pounds that things are not too bad, then the kiwi dollar paypackets come in and you reevaluate how much you are spending. Just something to keep in mind when you are sorting things out.

I've recently packed about 10 boxes full of bedding as mother in law said 'don't buy it here as it's very expensive'.

Ah well ...... can replace my stuff with new NZ stuff bit by bit as needed I guess.

Vicky ... Palmerston North is a nice place. that's where my hubby grew up - his folks still live near there. They use to live in Ruahine Street.

It's got some really nice shops - and just about anything that a bigger town/city can offer yet it's still got that rural feel about it. We're not returning to the manawatu but will visit there on a regular basis to see family so would love to meet up when we pass that way.
