Has anyone tried to book a cheapie ticket with this from ANZ? I was poised at 9am when the tickets were released and struck like greased lightening but all the tickets I tried to get were sold out. Am I just too slow or are they pulling a fast one?

I have got cheap flights on there before, no doubt about it. They are not pulling a scam.
However......*today* is a special day. If you get a deal today, especially on an international flight you are very lucky!
I was "in there" on Nadi this evening and had chosen my dates (mostly at random), clicked through as quickly as possible....naturally the Air NZ site was crawling at this stage. I then got a message saying that for security reasons my session had timed out. Normally that would happen only if you take more than a few minutes to go through. Tonight I was sorted in 20 seconds. It's just the site can't handle the demand I suppose. Oh well, Nadi in January would have been hellishly hot anyway!

For the Rarotonga flights:
Site again crawls to a halt, it's so slow that it either times itself out or expires your search so you have to do it again. If ever you see that then you've already lost.
As you can see from the attachment, I ended up with normal priced outward flights and a $13 flight back. Then attempting to go for this, my session timed out anyway.
Morale, I suppose: Grabaseat is not a scam, it has saved me a decent amount of money in the past. But when it does these special days it's more hype than substance, however, *someone* must get those tickets, but with only 25 to go each time it's probably 25 people in Auckland with incredibly fast connections!

was in conversation last year with the manager of a hotel in Wellington's CBD who casually said that the 'owner' regularly block bought seats on this site, the re-sold at a small profit. I've got no reason to doubt him. Would this be possible?

No - you have to declare the names of the passengers when buying the seats, and these cannot be changed at a later date.

OH wanted to get flights yesterday. I had to tell her could not as I have not yet got a new RRV. My ears are still sore 12 hours later. Off to immigration for forms at lunch time.
