We will be leaving for New Zealand in 3 days. You can't imagine how excited we are!

After we confirmed our flights, I started calling recruitment companies and employers and was pleasantly surprised that I was indeed wanted! Prior to that, all I got was standard replies like "see you when you get here". This sounds ridiculous but I had to actually turn down one interview in Auckland because I had no time!

The majority of people interested in meeting up with me are from Wellington. Christchurch, where we actually wanted to settle in, did not have that many openings for me.

Our first stop will be Wellington and we stay at a B&B in Eastbourne. I have the Monday completely blocked out! I have 5 interviews in all. On Tuesday, I have another 2 interviews in the morning. We also contacted 2 schools in Karori. We had excellent response from both the principals. One even gave us her home number to call on Sunday evening to fix an appointment! We are impressed. Vera plans to look at some housing as Wellington is where we are likely to settle looking at the job prospects.

We plan to drive down to Christchurch on Wednesday where I have one interview lined up on Thursday and the most crucial interview of all - with NZIS, on Friday morning. We also want to see some schools and houses in Christchurch, just in case the Christchurch interview turns into an offer.

We fly out on Air New Zealand to Wellington via Auckland and return from Christchurch.

I am not sure if I will have access to internet while we are in NZ. If we do, I will post anything interesting we come across.

Thanks to all who have helped us by answering our silly questions. We are more prepared now and hopefully look the same when we meet our case officer next Friday!

Cheers,
Shagen

have the best time ever!!!

Thanks to you hubby and I have a date at the jap place, so a big thank you for coming over!

Remember if you are stopping off and looking at places to live before you get to chch and want real estate agents to show you some homes, keep quiet..ok! just say you are thinking of buying and shut up! let them take you out and about and just appear interested and pleasant, otherwise you wont get to see the houses in side and if your furniture will fit.

I hope chch wins, but I guess you have to go where the jobs are...

all the best and looking forward to finally meeting

13th March 2005

We had quite a problem when we arrived at Singapore and when we wanted to check in for our onward flight to Auckland. We booked seats that were all together but when SAT (Air New Zealand's ground agent) gave us the boarding passes, they were not together. Had a hard time trying to pursuade others on board to swap seats with me so that I could be with the family. Thankfully we were on a night flight. Being on a 767 long haul is quite congested.

There was about 4 hours in Singapore. I called forum member Vincent and his family came over to the airport to meet us. We had drinks at McDonald's, see photo and caught up. It was nice to finally meet face to face!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v228/sganason/Dscf0003.jpg

We arrived Auckland on Sunday at 11.45am. The immigration and customs were a breeze. I was pleasantly surprised that we had no problems. They had a special queue for families travelling with children below 5. We had one, so went straight to the immigration officer. She asked what our purpose was for visiting NZ and we said holiday. Wanted to see our return tickets and after that, was "Welcome to New Zealand and have a nice holiday".

Off we went to the customs lane. He asked us if we had anything to declare. We said yes - medication for the kids and some instant noodles from back home. He said okay - screened through the x-ray machines and we were cleared. No long queue and everything we feared would happen did not happen.

We got on to the shuttle and in a few minutes were at the domestic terminal. Told the security that we had a 1pm flight to catch and he allowed us to beat the queue.

The flight to Wellington was absolutely fantastic! The scenery from the plane was breath taking as the plane flew along the coast.

Wellington airport was also very well laid out and picked up our car, met the Tays, fellow Malaysian couple, waiting for us at the airport. Picked up our car from Apex and drove to our B&B at Eastbourne. This is a very lovely part of Wellington.

The weather was really great! It has been 7 hours here and we like it. Going to check out the Pizza place Sarah suggested tonight. Am planning out my interviews tomorrow. Vera is planning on going on sight seeing looking at the suburbs.

Am going to call Carol in a short while.

I will update you tomorrow after the interviews. Sorry if I have bored you!

Cheers,
Shagen

Hi Annie, Jes, Barbette and Andy,

Even though my family met Shagen's family for the first time for just 30-45 minutes at Changi Airport, we were talking to each other like we had known each other for years.

That is what I call the power of the internet - perfert strangers from different part of the world can become friends through cyber space.

Annie, you are right, my son, Junius, is in the middle of the photo and he is 4 years old while my wife, Joo bee is on the extreme right. As Shagen says, there is another queue for families with children under 5 and I am going to take advantage of it when I visit NZ in May.

Take care

Shagen - good luck for your interviews in Wellington and CHCH

Carol,

Thanks for meeting up with us this afternoon. It was really great to finally meet!

The picture I took has to wait for a few days. I need to figure out how to make it smaller without having access to my desktop at home. The pictures straight off the camera is too big!

Sarah,

Thanks for your PM. The pizza at Eastbourne (Wood Fired Pizzeria at Days Bays) was absolutely mouth watering. We especially liked the garlic pizza. We had it on Sunday evening on the beach across from the restaurant! We ate our hot pizza sitting on the beach watching the sun set. It was cold though, I mean the weather!

14th March 2005

This morning I took a ferry from Days Bay into Wellington City. It was a very nice ride and very convenient too.

My first interview was with Hudson. It was a little let down as he did not have anything in hand but just wanted to meet with me. I was quite dissapointed.

My next interview was with Hays nearby. The recruiter I interviewed with was very interested in "marketing" me to some of her clients. She asked me if I woudl mind seeing some of them before I leave. Of course I said yes. Later that afternoon, she called me and told me that Bank of New Zealand was keen on meeting me. The person I was to meet will be in Auckland on Tuesday and it has to be on Wednesday. Since I was leaving on the 9.30am ferry, he was willing to see me at 7.30am! That is absolutely fantastic! She said she is also contacting a few others.

After lunch I met up with Searchworks. The recruiter there was also very helpful. She called one of her clients immediately while I was there and I have a phone interview with Merridian Power on Thhursday morning.

My last interview for the day was with Powerhouse People. They were also very helpful. Told me that he did not have anything open right now and would be calling me in a few weeks time. Based on my skills and experience, he reckons I would be able to secure a job pretty easily.

All of them with the exception of Hudson, asked me if I needed a job offer to qualify for residency and if that was the case, they could also speak to prospective employers to get one. I think the key is really to be here to make things happen!

Wellington as a city was very different than what I expected. At 9am in the morning, cars were only trickling in and I hardly found people around. Not like big cities I am used to. Also the people are so very friendly and helpful.

While I was sitting on a bench at Post Office Square during lunch, a lady opposite me was having a sandwich and when she finished, she just left the bench to throw away the paper bag she was holding. She left behind on the bench her handbag and her cell phone. I was shocked! If this Kuala Lumpur or Jakarta, her handbag and cell phone would have found a new owner!

15th March 2005

This morning, we visited Karori Normal School (KNS) and Karori West Normal School (KWNS). KNS was just too big for our liking with a roll of 700+. KWNS was more personal and warm.

We then went to see some houses at Karori. It is a very lovely place and has some nice houses up on the hills but there aren't many for sale or rental. What we liked anbout Karori is the small town feel and yet being close to the city. You can find almost everything here.

We had lunch at the Karori Mall. It was nothing like the malls we are used to. It had Woolsworth and a few shops and cafes. That's about it! And there wasn't even a crowd.

After lunch we headed off to Tawa School in Tawa. We asked someone for directions and he said "that's way off now and could easily take you 20 minutes to get there". Well, we said we will give it a try. Surprising, it is really not that far! No offense but I think Kiwis have a thing with distances.

We met Carol and her daughter, Chloe, for coffee at a bakery in Tawa. It was so funny, we were both on our cell phones, Carol giving directions to Vera as I was driving. Carol asked what we were driving and how to recognise us and then immediately we passed each other waving at each other at opposite directions! Like Vincent the last time, it was like a couple of old friends meeting up! It felt really weird at first. Chloe, Anil and Ashwini became instant friends!

Carol gave us some suggestions around Tawa to look at. We drove around Tawa which had really nice houses and some of the newer ones were absolutely gorgeous and stunning views of the mountains. We then drove to Whitby and since it was after office hours, we were caught up in our first Kiwi traffic jam! It was horrendous - we got stuck for 7 whole minutes! Despite the jam, no one jumped queue as they would have from where we came from, no horns and a two lane road had two rows of cars.

That was 3 days in Wellington and obviously not enough! We have not yet done anything touristy! So it has to be Wednesday on our way to Christchurch! We need to get at least one tee-shirt that says New Zealand!

Cheers,
Shagen

16th March 2005

This morning started with a light drizzle and I had to be in Willis Street by 7.30am. My interview with Bank of New Zealand went really well. I think we had the chemistry. But now it's up to them if they want to proceed further.

Left Wellington on the 9.30am ferry. Returning the car and picking up the tickets were a breeze if not for the rush as I had to take a taxi from Willis Street to the pier. It took about 5 minutes but cost me $10.80!

The ferry ride was really beautiful but after it left Wellington it became misty and remained misty for the rest of the journey. When it reached Marlborough Sounds, the mist made it feel dreamy. We were on the observation deck, the mist and wind made it really freezing!

We picked up the car at Picton and started the 300 odd kilometer to Chch. As we drove out of Picton, the scenery immediately changed and it was really beautiful with the farms on the foreground and the mountains on the background. It was probably the season as everything was yellowish and brownish. We were wondering where all the sheep was until we noticed that they were about the same colour as the farm and they blended in with the background which is why we could not see them! Going through the hills and valleys made the scenery really beautiful. And after that it was the coast line that made the trip memorable. There is only one thing to describe the drive from Picton to Chch, great scenery!

Somewhere near Kaikora, I get a call from Hays. Bank of New Zealand is keen on proceeding further! Yipeeeee! She asked me how I felt - wasn't that obvious? So now she has to go back to BNZ and will come back to me on Friday.

Then it was another 2 hours into Christchurch! The cottage is just lovely and the weather is much warmer than Wellington. Probably it is just the wind in Wellington that made it colder.

17th March 2005

An early morning walk along the river Avon to my first interview on Armagh Street. Surprisingly no tall buildings here. And no crowd on the streets even at 8.30am! Where is everyone? Roads are almost empty except for the occassional car that passes by. I thought Wellington was slow!

I had a nice chat with the Ryan Recruitment. She told me to hold on and called several people that might be interested in me. None of them was around so I need to wait.

When we were having a really nice Indian lunch at a New World Mall in the city, she called. PWC was interested and might need to see them tomorrow before I go off.

We drove to meet Tanya and her kids at the Westburn School. Then we went off to her place for tea. Again it was like meeting old friends. This forum is really great!

Christchurch is a beautiful city. Lots of flowers and greenery but I am not sure if I will fit in with the pace here. I currently live in a very remote part of Indonesia in a palm oil plantation but even then, I find this really slow.

Where we finally settle really depends on where I land a job.

Tomorrow is D-Day! NZIS interview! And we still have not bought a single New Zealand tee-shirt! At the way things are progressing, I might end up buying one at the airport on the way back!

Cheers,
Shagen

We just got back from NZIS and we were told bt our case officer that we will get either one of two outcomes.

1. Work to residence
2. Permanent Residence

I need to get letters from the recruitment agencies and employers I saw this week to support my case in being able to get employment which she said could lead to a PR out right! She said she will give us a written reply next week.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. My interview went very well that I needed to extend my trip for another round of interviews with BNZ on Monday. Was in Wellington and the fog caused the airport to close. We had to leave so got our B&B host to drive us all the way to Auckland to catch a flight to Singapore.

They were really helpful! All buses to Auckland were full, trains were full, and all car rental companies had no car! So we were stranded! There were 1500 people trying to get out of Wellington! We were lucky to have made it!

We are now in transit in Changi waiting for our onward flight to Kuala Lumpur!

Need to break the news to my employers tomorrow that I have another job waiting for me!

Will post more after we have gotten back to our time zone!

Oh I forgot! We finally managed to get our selves tee-shirts and sweatshirts bearing... "Aotearoa - New Zealand". We picked them up at Global Culture, Kaikora on the drive back to Welly. That made the trip complete!

We left Welly at 9pm for the long drive to Auckland. It was a very nice but long drive and once again our hosts (Wendy & Doug) were really wonderful to offer to do that for us! We passed Fielding close to midnight and were thinking about Dave and Sandra.

We think this IS the country for us. We did not do much touristy stuff and the one week or so wsa spent to really assess our adaptability and we think we like it here! The people are really great! The schools are great! It is so safe for the kids and I think although this was our first time, we know we did not make a mistake in choosing New Zealand!

I know there are quite a number of you out there in a similar situation as we are in - never having been to NZ before this. I hope all of you also will eventually feel the same.

Cheers,
Shagen

Hi Shagen,

Good to hear about your suceess in getting a job with BNZ. Joo Bee and myself are very happy for you.

Does that mean that you will be settling in Wellington? Good on you and we can come to visit you more often as Palmerston North is just a 2 hour drive.

Take a good rest before embarking on a new journey to NZ. Take care.

Vincent, Joo Bee and Junius

The attitude of your B&B host is the reason I want to go to NZ, and why NZs should be proud of themselves.
Please give out the name and address of the B&B so that other people can give then buisness.

Good luk in the future and hope you stay in Kiwi land.
