Ok, I'm in that boat where I can't sell my house because there is a financial meltdown in my country. So I am stuck renting for another year at least. But a strange thing happened when we told our landlord that we were going to stay another year. I actually started to relax and enjoy renting.
I started to notice that we are able to get out and enjoy our weekends together, exploring, riding bikes, going for a weekend away because we don't have a house that we are busy improving/maintaining. Also we aren't allowed to have pets, so we tend to zoom off for the weekend more often than we used to when we had pets. I still love house shopping. I still think about the joys of painting things the color I want and tearing out carpets left and right, and installing good insulation. But as the weather improves, I notice more and more that our friends who are enjoying homeownership are spending their time and money on their house, we are exploring all the countryside we can find.
I'm not really suggesting that you rent by choice, we have had terrible problems getting good renters in our US house and dealing with the whole issue from afar was a nightmare. Lots of lost sleep over our house in the US. However I think I am now in the bloom where you are planted mode and just trying to make the best of the situation.
PS. Our NZ rental house has central heating. I'll admit that my experience of renting this winter was atypical for a rental in New Zealand.
