In UK there are quite a few restrictions on which beaches you can take your dog. Certainly dogs are not allowed at all on a lot of the beaches in the more touristy areas in the south (during the summer), or at best there may be a small area for them.
I just wondered what the position was in NZ? Any comments please??? :D

Where we live on the Hibiscus Coast dogs are not allowed on the beach(main beaches) between 9am and 7pm during summer months but there are still walks we can do with our dog away from the main beaches.
Dogs are not allowed in many of the National Parks too.

It varies by area, and by beach. Some beaches are designated as dog beaches, and you can take your dogs there any time of the day, any day of the year. Other beaches have restrictions: where I am (the Coromandel peninsula) dogs are allowed on the non-dog beaches beaches at any time for most of the year, but access is restricted during holiday periods, although it's not banned altogether (e.g. between December 15 and the end of February, and certain other holidays, dogs aren't allowed on the beach between 9 am and 7 pm).
EDIT: Kerry and David beat me to answering this!

Usually the local council website will tell you where the dog exercise areas are and which beaches will allow dogs (leashed or unleashed) and if there are seasonal restrictions.
