Hi all, my partner is currently in New Zealand on a working holiday visa. We are about to apply for his PR which apparently will take 12-18 months to decide. So we are also applying for a work permit at the same time as his WHV will run out in March.

In the application form for the work permit, it asks if you are applying for a single journey work visa, a multiple journey work visa or a work permit. If he gets the work permit and not the visa (because he is already in NZ) does that mean he will not be able to leave and re-enter the country in the time his PR is processing? We are planning on going on at least one overseas holiday in the next year!

If you tick multiple journey it asks you to provide reasons you need a multiple entry visa. What reasons would be accepted here? Is wanting to have a holiday a good enough reason?! Or are we forced to stay in NZ while his PR is processing :uhoh

If you are planning to leave NZ for a holiday etc. then you will need the multiple entry visa. AFAIK.

Visas allow entry to NZ, then you are granted a new permit at the border.

Thanks for that, that's what I thought, I'm just worried about whether he will be given the multiple entry visa or just a work permit since we are already in NZ so he doesn't need the visa to come here!

Has anyone here applied for and received a multiple entry visa? What reason did you give for needing one??

I've had several - just put you need multiple entry for holiday/business reasons. I never put anything more than that down. You pay for the permit and the visa, so you get whatever you pay for.

When I got my work visa I applied from inside the country... so really I applied for a work permit. I did it on the spot with a visa officer and had the same question about needing multiple entries for holiday travel. She said i needed both a permit and a visa....so I was charged $200 for each!
I thought that was a little ridiculous, but didn't think to question it in the moment.

Ahhhh that makes sense, I didn't realise that you had to pay separately for the permit and the visa, so they don't really mind giving you both as long as they get their money! :D
Is there any difference in cost between single and multiple entry visas?
