Really depends on your airline. I think Air NZ have the best luggage allowance and its always worth contacting them direct to find out what you are allowed. We emailled Singapore airlines and told them we were emmigrating and got an extra 5 kg out of it but they only allow 20kg anyway so its worth a try whoever you are flying with. I think Air NZ allow 30kg, and Emirates have a large luggage allowance to, although that is a longer flight.

I agree - it all depends on which airline you fly with. I think the rule of thumb is to let them know your are emmigrating when you book the flight and just ask for more luggage allowance ..... if you don't ask you don't get.

Hi, lindajax,

Welcome to the forum!

If memory serves, Air NZ has a luggage allowance of 64kg, as opposed to the standard 20kg of Singapore and others. They also have a more generous seat pitch of 32" instead of 30" (Qantas). The downside of Air NZ is they don't have the individual in-flight entertainment centers on the backs of each seat, so you have to watch whatever movie they're showing on the common screens. Anyway, you have to weigh it all out (har!) and decide which airline best suits your needs.

Best of luck with your move!! - Rae

I think baggage allowances depend on which direction you go in, for those of us in the USA we don't have a choice, but over in Britain you can either go via Asia or the States. If you go via the states you are allowed two bags of up to 32kg each whereas flights via asia only let you have about 20kgs and I think that might be in total not each bag!!

I was reliably given this info by my kiwi boyfriend who said that all NZers when they return home after their obligatory few years in Europe try to fly home via america because of the baggage allowance limits!

There is some useful info at

Is there any way via the US other than LA??? :hopeso Boy, I hate that airport with a passion - and with all the new security it's even worse. They open everything; you are not allowed to have locks on your luggage so could be difficult as an emigration route if you can't fit all valuables in your hand luggage. Also :( they broke a bunch of our stuff when we came back from NZ this year :( ....... :eek :eek

have got to agree with that last post, We went for a smaller luggage allowance when we came over just to avoid that airport and the daft security measures they have. Why on earth do you have to go through immigration, whats wrong with putting a room aside as a transit lounge like all other international airports of any size. Its a shame really as with Pete being tall and Air NZ having bigger seats it would have been preferable, not too bothered that they don't have individual screens just wish they would change their route.

we are going via hong kong, as I don't fancy all the damn security measures in LA. If you don't mind that though, Air NZ now do a flight between San Fran and Christchurch I believe

Thanks everyone for your posts about luggage and crappy airports :nice1
looks like I'll be doing the tedious job of ringing airlines and trying to weedle any extra kilos I can out of then :wah I don't fancy my chances.
Air NZ sound ok but flights are rather pricey :?

Singapore Airlines says 20kg on the ticket, but when I called they will allow 25kg. Also, on their website you can take 7kg in one of those mini carry on cases, plus handbag, plus camera.

Now if you tend to have a really big handbag...... :laugh

Apart from luggage allowance, would definitely recommend Singapore over ANZ

Hey Sandra, you can take a laptop on board too in addition to the other bits

I am certain they will..

Won't they?

We got on with a Lap top, large handbag (toilet bag) and then a piece of hand baggage each, bit difficult to walk but it was OK, just make it look light.

We're flying Cathay Pacific and the allowance is 20kg each. We tried phoning them to ask for more because we were emigrating (one way ticket!), but that didn't work..

michelle and richard, we did the same, (the fact that one of my shoulders was about 3 inches lower than the other could have given the game away) oh and Pete had his briefcase too.

Cathay Pacific are one of the most inflexible airlines in my experience, we shipped a case by airfreight as it was going to be cheaper than paying excess charges. They just wont budge on their allowance.

I believe that excess baggage charges are calculated at 1% of the full economy fare per kilo and it can really mount up.
