Hi All,
Have just submitted my ITA (at last) and have return flights booked to Nz for the Xmas holiday to visit OH and then return to Uk basically to wait for PR to come through, but I'm now thinking why don't I come over at xmas and stay and wait for my PR in NZ. I'm a teacher so the timing for the starting the new school year will be better this way also. The only thing is being a teacher I will have to hand my notice in by Friday to leave at xmas so need to make a decision. We are obviously all really missing each other and it would be great to be here at xmas and not go back to UK but will I be alright immigration wise ?- forgot to say I am the principal applicant and OH is on a work visa. Hope this makes sense.
Cheers
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
I can't see any reason why this plan wouldn't be okay. Of course you wouldn't be able to start work until you receive PR, or if you got a work permit to see you through. However, as you've already submitted your ITA, you should have PR by January anyway, as long as there aren't any snags with your medical or with the info you've submitted. I'd say go for it!

My thoughts are - If you are from the UK you will automatically get a six month visitor visa in your passport. You mention that OH is on a work permit? this means that you can get an open work permit and student permits for your children (for a fee of course:o). I know, however, that there are extra requirements for teachers though, ie registration and such - someone with more knowledge will correct me if I am wrong there.
Good luck

Just watch for a possible snag which certainly affects South Africans and possibly also those from elsewhere. If you are in NZ waiting for PR and you do not have a job offer, then NZIS will NOT interview you in NZ and will inform you that you must return to London for your PR interview. (Or in the case of those from SA they can also return to SA and wait for the next round of interviews).
If you have a job offer then the need for an interview will fall away (sounds like your OH is in this position). Also, if you actually apply for PR in NZ you might get around this issue, but that will mean waiting till once you have arrived to apply (which no longer applies to you but it might for someone else).
