Hello...

My name is Clare and I am a freelance journalist (food/lifestyles) who just returned from my second trip to New Zealand. I absolutely fell in love with Wellington and am considering moving there in about 7-8 months, to stay for at least one year.

I'm just barely scratching the surface on researching how to go about doing this, so I'm hoping this forum will be helpful. It seems that, for someone with a job like mine, it might be difficult to secure sponsorship. It looks like all of the major food magazines are based in Auckland, though I have not researched yet what publications are based in Wellington.

Thanks for any help you can offer on being a freelance writer or getting a staff writing job in Wellington. I have 10+ years experience and have been published in numerous magazines, papers and websites.

Sincerely,
Clare

From one who did their degree dissertation on the national daily press, the very best of luck to you!!!

Fairfax Media is your friend when it comes to the press here (or at least in Wellington): http://www.fairfaxnz.co.nz/publications/general/info94.html

Best of luck! Let us know how it goes. :)

Hello and welcome!

Best of luck. My husband has been looking for a job as an editor here in Palmy for awhile with no luck. So now he's trying to get into the teaching program at Massey so that he can teach instead.

Welcome

from southern california myself (grew up in Palos Verdes, went to UCLA, have a house in Redondo Beach). Moved to NZ (near Auck) for work for a few years this past July, but have every intention of going back to sunny LA eventually.

this forum has tons of info if you are serious about the move.

can't help much on the writing publishing side, but my wife is a serious foodie and loves Taste magazine. Every week she goes to the library and brings home food books and magazines.

best of luck!

I grew up in P.V. also but went to USC...:) What a small world! We are trying to get down to Christchurch...thought Auck seemed a bit too much like L.A.;)

small world indeed! went to PV high for 2 years until they shut it down, then graduated from PVPHS in 93. My brother is faculty at USC and many of my best friends went there. Of course they, and you are my mortal enemies.

Auck and LA are nothing alike in my opinion. There isn't anyplace like the La-la land. Also Auckland is much more like portland, seattle (or chicago?). it is by far the biggest and most metropolitan city in NZ, but is no where near the size and astonishing sprawl of LA. Wellington is chill spot that feels more like SF to me. But i hear you. the city is the city and if you come to NZ, you should try to get out of it. We settled semi-rural in a beach town about 50 min North of Auck.

Haven't been to ChCh other than thru the airport, but i hear it is beautiful and scenic and looks less built upon itself than Auck and Wellington - like all of the South Island.

I went to Miraleste (you know, the "poor" side of the hill) so I'm a (wee) bit older than you ;) We actually lived in PVE before we moved here and left about the time they were re-opening PV High. My OH was wondering if you can ever catch any college football games there? I would think ESPN would show some of the 'SC games being that they are one of the best teams (and maybe UCLA when they play 'SC :laugh)

We did look at Auckand quite a bit- very hard to walk away from the North Shore areas- your comparison of cities is very interesting! Anyway- sorry to hijack this thread- its just great to hear there are fellow so. calif. folks who are happy in nz!
