Auckland has just changed its regulations regarding minor DIY work as a result of changes to the Building Act 2004 ( not sure if this is an Auckland law or a national one, if national then everyone will be able to take advantage of the changes).

Basically a wide range of minor building activities will now not need building consent from the council -- such things as fence and deck building, awnings, pergolas and verandas of a certain size, removing or altering a non load-bearing wall, installing or replacing windows that do not modify structural elements, altering access to dwellings for people with disabilities, nternal shop or office fitouts. it also allows the alteration of existing plumbing in bathrooms, kitchens, laundries and toilets, including minor drainage alternations but excluding new connections to services. (I think this was the subject of another question on another thread recently)

So this is what the short blurb said in City Scene, the Auckland city council newsletter. For more info , you will need to follow up with the council.

Blimey, didn't realise you needed permission before for that! How about changing a light bulb?
