lot of red tape involved in doing so. one advantage, is some carriers allow for you to fill the car with goods, ie. reducing shipping fees/excess baggage.

That sounds high. I think I was quoted around ukp1000 earlier this year for ro-ro to Auckland. Take a good look at the prices on TradeMe; cars are pretty cheap here in NZ so it may not be worth bringing yours. Also note that it will cost around NZ$1000 to get it on the road if nothing much needs doing. It can be much higher and there are some cars that can NEVER be put on the road because they don't pass the latest frontal impact standards.

Filling your vehicle with personal belongs whilst not illegal is frowned upon by MAF / Customs as it makes it difficult to be inspected. You may well incur additional costs if you do this.
If you haven't seen it already then this Importing a motor vehicle into NZ (http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/importing/) factsheet may be useful.
