With now just over a week to go its time to see if minds have been changed etc. This is for the party Vote.

I had the ACT party phone last night, of course they asked to speak to my husband. I told them he was too busy to chat to them and they hung up on me! :laugh

Greens doing well at the moment. If this is an indication nationaly, its not looking good for John Key. Most other polls show Greens a strong third which means Key will have to win by a large majority unless parties change their minds who they will support.

Probably the same person who has just rung me and asked me where I was from as my accent was different. When I said UK and how long I had been here he said in his opinion I shouldn't be able to vote until I got citizenship. He then put the phone down. Thats 2 less votes Act will get not that I was voting for them anyway but it does put you off.

Obviously the Act Party's slogan should be - 'Vote for us, we don't like immigrants or women" - probably not much of a winner on this forum. :p

I wonder if the forum members who have chosen Act on this poll would still vote for them knowing that the Party doesn't think they should be allowed to vote?

According to their policies they do encourage skilled immigrants so they obviously like immigrants. If he hadn't had put the phone down I would liked to have spoken more on this subject. I think that he probably feels that if you have citizenship you are more committed to New Zealand as a year is not really long enough to know the full ins and outs of the way NZ works. I am still trying to understand the voting system here.

You're probably more generous than I am, having met many people who are so anti-immigrants whether it be here or in the UK, I would certainly expect some of the parties to represent this group.

I find often the term 'skilled immigrants' is used alongside race and class issues.

Its an interesting issue about only 5 year citizenship people being able to vote. Those relatively new to NZ who feel this is a valid point are probably torn between not voting as they don't think they should, and, voting because they feel they have an opinion on how NZ should be run.

Are Kiwis who have been away a long time still able to vote by post?

Interesting issue, might start a thread .....

If you are an NZ citizen then you can vote from overseas provided that you have visited NZ in the past 3 years.

I think that if you have PR the same is true except that it is a 1 year period.

It doesn't say how long you have to have visited for so turning up for a week to see family once every 3 years lets you keep your NZ vote.

Yes, per our poll it looks like Nats & Act would get 18 votes between them and Labour and Greens would also get 18 votes.

Whoever is unsure could swing it either way! :)

Well in a few hours we shall see how accurate this poll was even if it was only out of 41 people. I left it till this afternoon and was amazed at the amount of people there. It was very busy but they had plenty of booths. They reckon the first results should start to come in about 8.30pm
