I'm sorry if I'm posting a really obvious question, but the Immigrate NZ website has just sent me round in a circle of links, and I don't know if I can theoretically put in an EOI for a Skilled Migrant or not...

I've just done their quick check of the EOI points, and it has given me 120.

I have said "No" to the whole first section (Skilled Employment inside and outside of NZ); "Yes" to recognised basic qualification (I have a BA Hons from a recognised UK University), and "No" to the remaining questions in that section (Post Grad degree / NZ degree / degree in the shortage list (it is in History...)); 6 years relevant work experience (age 22-27); none of those in NZ or in the skills shortage area; yes to those being in a comparable labour market (all in the UK); I'm in the age bracket 20-29; no family in NZ; Partner with basic degree and good English skills but no employment or job offer.

This gave me 120 points.

My question is - how do they work out the relevant work experience if you don't have a job offer or a LTSSL qualification? Would they then bump me back down to 100 (which is what it would be if I said I had no work experience at all)? Or would I still be able to claim for my Sales Administration and civil service jobs?

The website seems to say that it has to be from the skills list, or from the same field as my degree (and could I claim that the research and analytical skills I did in my degree is the same as I am using in my job?)

However, it then says: If you do not have a skilled job or job offer, any work experience you claim points for must have been in a comparable labour market. (which mine is given that it is the UK) Would that be enough?

And could I claim any points if I ended up getting a job offer for something not on the LTSSL (the points indicator seems to suggest no)

Sorry if I'm posting a really obvious question, but I might have more points than I thought, and therefore be a little bit closer to NZ :D

If you have the points you can apply as a skilled migrant, whether you are listed on the LTSSL or not.

I'm not sure if your work experience needs to be in the same area as your degree, or even all in the same field if you aren't applying for points based on LTSSL experience or degree.

When I was in a similar situation my work experience and degree, both not on LTSSL, were in the same basic area.

Many thanks - I think I will start getting in touch with the NZ immigration dept to double check!

Also - does anyone know how quickly things move in politics? I know (from all indications when we were holidaying last month) that the National is likely to get in, which might have an influence on the immigration process - I don't want to lose our chance on the whim of a politician! Or do you think we'd be safe following our original plans of starting the application in February?
