This is from Australia. Talk about an anal retentive Immigrations Department GEESH! It makes you wonder about the sanity of some government agencies indeed. I hope this sort of narrow minded attitude never happens at NZIS or does it and I don't know about it?

Cheers all!

:no What if Moeller isn't a Doctor nor had any skills on the Shortage List... Would his plea even have seen the light of day?

Actually, I have read some appeals on the Residence Review Board website (http://www.residencereviewboard.govt.nz/pages/res_home.aspx) where people have been denied residency based on the medical needs of their children (I've read at least one which was denied based on a child having Downs Syndrome)

Alas we know of folks back in UK who've been turned down for Oz for this very reason :(

Finally found the story I was thinking about

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10534597

so yes it does happen here, and people can resort to some pretty desperate measures...

I hope Australian Immigration will change their mind. Must be sad to live in country you love and know you can't stay forever.

NZ changed it's medical tests back in 2006 to include references to special educational needs. I suspect the same ruling could occur here unfortunately.
Luckily we got in prior to the 2006 medical change and even then immigration took a special look at our application due to our son's syndrome and if it hadn't been for the fact that I was employed for a role they couldn't fill internally for 8 months I suspect we would have been rejected

I find this really hard to stomach to be honest  We spend all our time trying not to 'label' children and treat them as the individuals they so rightly are but as soon as someone gets a 'label' we then attach a cost or sense of worth on them - flipping ridiculous....

Sorry but I find this incredibly arbitrary in it's application :(

I was actually talking to my friend about this subject last night (spooky), she has a down syndrome child and she was relaying a story to me along the same lines about another downs family she knew. They were apparently denied access to NZ due to the child's illness (not sure illness is the right word - just different!), anyway they actually appealed the ruling was overturned.:clap So there is hope to buck the system and win.:yes

Maybe they should have applied for PR before they moved.
With the backing of the community that they appear to have i expect they will overturn the decision anyway.
If He wasn't a doctor it wouldn't even have made the news.

Unfortunately that cuts both ways with disability. Funding, benefits, special assistance etc cannot be awarded unless there is an official 'label' - a diagnosis or an assessment.

This is as true here as it is in the UK

Very true and as a parent of a disabled child I must say it is a lot easier having a 'label' rather than having to explain the whole thing each time.

Unfortunately in terms of funding, benefits, special assistance, etc. NZ is light years behind the UK in terms of educational, health and support services for disabled children.
