My employer said they would apply for a 5 year visa

Now that I've seen the application, it seems like a one year work permit under 'Essential Skills'. Rather the covering letter states a one year contract and the medicals state 'desire to stay more than 12 but less than 24 months' so I suspect I will get perhaps a one year permit.

Is this normal...I mean do we first have to have a one year WP and then extend it? FYI it is for me and my family - maybe that could make a difference?

Perhaps I misunderstood the whole thing

Hi NC,

under the Essential Skills policy, you can get a WP for up to 5 years, but that depends on the job offer you have. Mine was open-ended, so I got 5 years (well, a few months less actually because my passport wasn't valid all that long).

So if you're offered a one-year contract by your employer, you'll only get a one-year WP, which of course you can extend later on with a new or extended job offer.

I can't remember reading anything about a "desire to stay for ... months" on the medical - is that the standard NZIS form?

Cheers,
Jan
