has anyone brought a car (have done a forum search on the topic - mysteriously non grata)? how was it? does anyone recommend this? not?
we've a bmw 320 touring we are arguing about - as always. me, i'd burn it in the thames at low tide, hub thinks bring.
the only sensible bring argu is to sell the thing on other side to buy 2 small japanese cars. realistic? oh, and i've wrecked the alloys and they must be killer pricey to replace.

I have a 2 year old Saab that I would really like to bring with me. It is a left hand drive which is a problem I would be willing to live with but what is really stopping me is that it will be much harder and more expensive to get it serviced. Whatever we buy I want to make sure I am not at the mercy of only place or two that can work on it.

Cool, thanks for the link Timbo. Are you a fellow Saaber?

You are welcome.
No, not a saab owner. I drive a Veedub and Sarah has a Mazda. Both cars are what can been described as old smokers, so we should feel quite at home with the choices available in NZ.

I'm sure I remember reading that you can't bring in and drive left hand drive cars. You would need to convert it to RHD.
Have a look at this link:

I looked into it. I can import a LHD car for personal use only. I can't sell the car for 5 years unless it has been converted. To do this you have to be coming from a LHD country and you need to have owned the car for a certain ammount of time.

we didn't know about the lhd bit. logical.
am practicing 'good morning dahlin', the car stays'.
the bmw is a good, practical car in most ways - its just that it costs big £££ to do anything - and driving is so appalling here that people are always banging car etc. and the depreciation element of buying new just slays me.
oh well, thanks for help!

We bought one at an auction when we first arrived and one at a dealership. Since then we've traded the one we purchased at the auction in (and came out ahead! :nice1 ) and bought another one at a dealership (same one) and have had good experiences with all. There wasn't anything wrong with the one we bought at the auction, I just couldn't handle driving around in a "soccer mom" mini-van! Picked up a nice Toyota Harrier 4WD (same as a Lexus RX300 in the U.S.) and now feel much better thank you! :laugh

We exported our 4 year old Renault 9 years ago quite successfully.
Parts were more expensive and ordered in from France.
Ridiculous!
It was quicker and cheaper to ring our previous local dealer in Wylam (Northumberland) who posted them out to us.
Sold it 2 years ago -(got $2000 trade in for it)
but really glad we brought it and didnt have to buy a car when we got here.
