We might need a job offer - i would like some feedback: how often is a company willing to wait until you've got your permanent residency before you have to start working? That means that they will probably have to wait for you 3- 4 months!
I just think it's vrey risky to start working on a temp visa while you're waiting for your permanent residency to be approved (especially if you want to ship your dogs/furniture etc)

Any advice/suggestions?

Hi elzahn,
I presume it would be up to the individual company.
For us, the company who offered OH a lineman job in Feb when we were over, seem fairly happy to wait for him, thank goodness. We are STILL waiting to hear about our PR, but we just keep updating them via email and they seem perfectly fine with that.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply - just curious to know - why are you STILL waiting for your permanent residency - 9 months later (if you've already got a job offer?)

Yes I must agree, it is all down to the individual company. Some are quite switched on and must realise that recruiting from over seas can have a time factor involved. I would imagine most companies worth thier salt would do some investigative work prior to offering employment to a migrant, but I quess this is not always the case.
In my case they have also requested to be kept in the loop as reguards the immigration process, and they seem quite happy with that. Thank fully.

I though one of the request for submitting a job offer for PR is that there must be a start date on the job offer? But if they wait for you - then there's probably no start date on the contract?

Not sure about the start date requisite for PR but surley if your future employer states as soon as the immigration process is completed your job will commence then this would be fine , no?
I think maybe if you are at risk of loosing the job offer due to immigation delays then NZIS will push you through quicker.

Thanks - any other request for the job offer to be valid? How long do you have to stay in that specific job?

Good question!! when we sent off our ITA with evidence of our relationship, we thought that our marriage certificate, joint mortgage details and bank statements for a period of time over 12 months would be good enough, but not for our CO. She wanted more! we've sent more (over 4 weeks ago now) but we havent heard anything as yet....hopefully soon:nice1

Not quite sure what you meen , but NZIS will want copies of the job offer along with copies of your contract and the details of the company so that they can contact them if required. I would quess that NZIS would contact the company in NZ as a matter of course.

Hi Dylan

As already suggested, I think it's very dependent on the company. I had an interview with the Otago DHB (Nursing job) on 17th April this yr and they have been fantastic....we too are still waiting on approval! My initial contract and covering letter said start date no later than 30th Sept '08 but due to the seemingly never-ending PR process, they have now written to me extending the start date til Feb '09. Like I say, they have been nothing short o wondeful......sooooooooooooo understanding. The reason that they issued me with a follow up letter was because they had heard that in the past, the PR process has been held up as they have queried the start date.

My company waited a year, but they're a big company and always recruiting anyway.

Why are you waiting so long for PR - I thought it only takes about 3/4 months if you've got a job offer?

You are assuming that all the waiting is down to the PR and NZIS, when in fact a lot of people don't move over immediately e.g. wait to sell their house etc first.

Going to ask the same sort of question..... Sorry to hijack..

But we have our ITA in awaiting to be assigned a CO with no job offer... have now been applying for jobs, but was wondering if they want us to start within a matter of weeks what will happen, will PR be granted that quick or will NZIS issue a work permit until they check all paperwork which they now have.

Thanks

OH had a job offer middle of April and started end of August. We completed all the paperwork as he received his job offer and he picked up his blue stickers 3 days before he flew out.

How do people manage to get a company to wait a few months? I had a telephonic interview with a recruitment agency thursday evening and she's the second recruitment agency telling me if I can't be available within 4 - 6 weeks - I won't be able to get a job offer. How do you relocate and emigrate in 4 weeks? (selling your house, prepping your dogs, organising container etc)
It just sounds impossible to do. Hopefully this might only be the recruitment agent's view and not companies directly???

like a lot of us its catch 22 we put our house for sale first which took 12 months, in that time I lost 2 job offers when the house finally sold I funny enough had a job offer in the same week, however they wanted such a tight turnaround 6 weeks we ended up coming on work visas valid for 2 years and then waited for PR which took another 3 months sometimes you have to take the chance

PR without a job offer is the long way to get there, but after all the hoops you can stay forever and are not tied to a job. There are other visa types that are much quicker, having a job offer will make PR quicker but you can get a work visa in a number of days (I believe). They limit the time you can spend in NZ to about 2 years, but as has already been said you can just apply for PR once you are over and working.

a lot of companies will wait - especially if they think you are worth it. Remember that even with the number of people trying to get into New Zealand, I know for a fact that certainly Auckland has had a NEGATIVE immigration number for the past few months. This basically means that there are still more people leaving than are coming in (and if you look just on here you can see how many are arriving). Employers who want skilled labour haven't got a choice a lot of the time, and from what I can gather a lot of the kiwi workforce are not the 'best' workforce, and employers therefore are loving the immigrants.
