How much do you pay for car insurance?

Am looking at buying a Toyota Landcruiser Prado (8 seater) 1997 - when we arrive obviously! I've 8 years NCD and 8 years experience. Can't seem to get an online quote with an 'overseas' licence. How much are you paying for your insurance guys? I had heard ASB bank was good??

Around $400-$500 I should think. We use AMI Insurance and pay $250 or so for an '88 Landcruiser

ASB is underwritten by IAG - who own State and NZI, so it may be worth checking their online website to get a quote. The State website certainly gives quotes for overseas licences.

We went with Westpac (our bank) as they were the cheapest quote. Came out about $550 fully comp, but the car is a bit newer. The price varies depending on how much excess you're prepared to pay. I plumped for a lowish excess, or I could have gotten a bit off. I'm guessing that's probably what you're looking at if you want fully comp.

You could try entering that you have an NZ licence. It only takes 30 minutes to pick one up when you get here.

Meant to add - I don't have an NZ licence and was never asked for one.

We pay $390 for a Nissan Tino, which is alot smaller than the car you are looking at. We dont have our NZ licenses yet either which wasn't a problem. We went through an independant Financial Services company.

Just asking but does NZ require you by law to have auto insurance?

No it's entirely voluntary, which is a cause of some controversey since they let 15-year-olds drive!

We pay $426 for a Jaguar XJR (4L Supercharged) and $339 for a Toyota Caldina Wagon (2L turbo). That is with AMI who were cheaper than ASB.

No, not legally required which is ridiculous. You'd be mad not to insure.

FWIW I found the AA insurance the best value, even including AA membership it worked out cheaper for me.

Car Insurance is generally much cheaper than the UK, but there are reasons, the cover isn't as complete, and any injury costs aren't covered through the insurance.

and any injury costs aren't covered through the insurance.

Is that because they're covered by ACC?
