I have two lovely 15 years young big whicker chairs in really good condition and would appreciate knowing if anyone has successfully got this type of furniture through MAF inspection? Also if there was difficulty did they do the cleaning process with them and did they come back in good condition? Dont really want to leave them behind :no
If you have any info on this type of stuff it would be gratefully received.......we think they will be the only problem area we have...........currently pressure washing, cleansing and oiling the teak garden furniture........fingers crossed we will have done enough.

Can't answer the whicker question as we didn't bring any with us - but I was wondering how many other people saw the word and immediately read it as "Ficker"?
Is this another sign of settling in? :)

Our packers wouldn't pack our whicker chair or baskets as they said they wouldn't be allowed through. However since we arrived I have read about others who have had no problems. I think it depends who packs in the UK and who you get inspecting over here. It may be worth a check on the MAF website to see what the official rule is?
Good luck

We bought a whicker sofa over and MAF didn't inspect it. I did have one shipping company around for a quotation who said they wouldn't pack it and to get it rid of it :exit Was slightly annoyed though as I had got rid of a whicker laundry basket, OH said it needed to be treated, typically it would have got through no hassle, think the OH just didn't like it :o

WE contacked MAF directy (very helpful) about out wicker stuff (we also have a very nice wicker chair) and they told us to vaccum it very thouroughly and if possible wipe over with jeyes fluid or similar. It did get inspected by MAf, no issues raised though. Also, they did advise us that fumigation (if required) is nowhere near as expensive as most people fear and would be worth the cost for larger items, but probably not economical for smaller bits and pieces.

We had the same issue with people quoting half of our stuff several companies said they would not take what was interesting was 2 companies said I could not take my wine all 12 bottles I have though and Maf are not even interested on inspecting it I also listed a sea grass chest and wicker tables they are not intested again on inspecting them however they do want to look at my wicker baskets which I have vaccumed and wiped with Jeys

So I am interested in the fact that half of the posters used "whicker" and half used "wicker". I have always known it to be "wicker." is "whicker" a UK thing?
BTW I brought in 4 wicker baskets from Canada without any problem, MAF did not even want to look at them.
I would be more concerned that if they are those BIG wicker chairs they will cost a fortune to ship over , as shipping costs are by size not weight, and wicker is very cheap here, since most of it comes from Asia and NZ is a lot closer to Asia than the UK.

The title of the thread is, unfortunately, a spelling mistake.
Wicker is the woven furniture stuff- as in osiers on the Somerset Levels (ah, home...). Whicker is the noise a horse makes when it is pleased to see you (or a glob-trotting roving reporter as in Alan)

we brought wicker baskets too with very little concern from maf (except for one that they took away because it had some other type of plant/twigs woven in with the wicker that the maf inspector was not comfortable with). but hey, that was ok, becuase i was expecting them to confiscate all the wicker items we bought and i am glad that we did bring them instead of getting rid of them before we moved.

As others have said, it should it fine bringing wicker furniture, as long as you declare any items like this it wil be ok. Once your goods arrive you have to fill in forms for customs and they will decide what (if anything) needs to be looked at. It is more a problem if you don't declare them as they do carry out spot checks...and then you'd be in trouble!

I wish I had read this a month ago! My removal company said I could't take any wicker stuff so am sitting in my Dads house surrounded by wicker furniture I have left behind whilst waiting to fly out in 5 weeks, we are using Anglo Pacific, you think they would know better!!
Oh well, will leave them here in case we ever return!
