Everyone is different, everybodies requirements are different, but here goes!!!
Aprrox price for monthly replaceable soft lenses including supply of solutions and aftercares as required (min legal requirement is every 6mths) is $500 per year.
If you have more complex prescription/requirements then the price would increase from their.
Daily replaceable lenses come in at about $212 for 3 months supply. Aftercares are charged on top of that.
I hop that helps. Eric has not been easy to pin down, but I now have prices for spectacles which I will post on the other thread.

Can you clarify that? If you get the monthly replaceable lenses, does that mean you must see the optometrist at least once every six months?
FYI, I use Acuvue (the original version) bi-weekly disposables, and get them for US$25/pack (6 lenses per pack, one pack per eye) or less. I assume the price won't be quite so gentle on the wallet in NZ...

coastcat, sorry it was a little ambiguous (sp?), having worked in the profession for 10 years I forget that not everyone understands what I am talking about!!
Anyone who wears contact lenses, should have aftercares (a check of your eyes specific to wearing contact lenses but not a full sight test) every six months, it is to check the general health of your eyes etc and to make sure wearing the c/l is having no adverse effects. For some it may be necessary to have more regular checks especially when someone starts wearing lenses for the first time. Legally though opticians cannot give out more lenses if aftercare checks are not up to date. Hope this clarifies!!
Marie, bringing a supply is not a bad idea, I assume your bro in law will be supplying at cost? but don't forget those regular checks, it is for the sake of your eyes. Which practice does he own?? Eric worked at Halifax for years and some friends of ours here owned a specsavers before they moved out here!! Oh and I have friends who own the practice in Huddersfield - small world eh!!!

You are right, children do not get the help here with sight tests and glasses like they do in the UK. It's a shame really, Eric says they see very few children in fact.
One point I forgot to mention whenyou stock up on lenses....watch the dates on them.
Best wishes

I went to the Student Optometry clinic at Auckland Hospital (perk of being a Uni lecturer I got a free check!). They do cheap priced check-ups and supply glasses and contact lenses at low prices.
The students are in their final year before qualifying and are really thorough and watched over by a fully qualified optometrist. It was the most thorough check I've ever had, and although it took a little longer than usual it didn't bother me.
I have extended wear lenses, which I change every month. One years supply cost me about $500. Normal monthly lenses I was quoted $350 without the solutions.
You can get a twin pack of solution (2 month supply) for about $20 in most pharmacies, and can often get them on special.

I have just ordered my first batch of contact lensees in NZ. I wear Proclear Compatibles and used to order them from Postoptics in the UK ( and then see my local optometrist for the necessary sight and lens checks). I used to pay 35 pounds for pk of 6 so with two different strength eyes, used to pay 70 for 6 months worth.
Here I ordered them by telephone from Eclipse Eye Products ( 0800 145135) and paid $160 incl postage. They arrived the next day I think. I reckon that works out about the same as UK cost.

Damn...hadn't even thought about this one amongst everything else...
I use FocusDailies by CIBA Vision. Anyone in NZ seen them around, and any idea of the prices? Otherwise will be putting aside the 212$ quoted above for the other daily ones rather than filling the container with supplies - can't somehow imagine much is more expensive in NZ than Switzerland!!
Thanks!

Hi everyone,
I'm starting to run out of daily lenses so thinking about looking about for a good deal. Haven't looked far yet, but found this... http://www.contacts2go.co.nz/... anyone tried it? Looks like $100 for 90 lenses (I suppose that makes it $200 for 3 months supply).

Hi,
Going slightly off topic here, but has anyone in NZ seen any info on laser eye surgery? I would like to get it done, but reluctant to do it here in the UK just in case there are any complicaitons, but have not yet found any details of anyone in NZ doing them.
Thanks,
Emily

Just compared www.contacts2go.co.nz with my usual one of www.getlenses.com (I usually wear monthly extended wear, night & day).
Last time I bought them from the getlenses I bought a years supply (4 boxes of 3 for both eyes) for £135.00, free p&p.
The NZ one came out at $640.00, free p&p which by my reckoning is approximately £250!!!
A massive difference, so not also am I stocking up but I'm also re-directing my mail for the next 2 years so I can still order them online as long as they're sent first class mail!

I would just like to hear your views.
I asked a couple weeks ago about laser surgery. Well I have just come back from my second visit and although he was willing to go ahead he could not guarantee my eyesight would be 100% and I might still needs glasses for reading sometimes.
He suggested that I try contact lenses for a few months. Mono ones like the surgery would be. I said I had never considered contacts because of putting them in. He then went on to say that he could offer me a service one a months supply and fit new contact at a cost of $60 a time. This has made me think I might as well have contacts.
The surgery could be about $5500 which I would be prepared to pay if it was guaranteed to work.
How difficult is it to get used to contact?
What is the monthly cost?

Hi Susan
Speaking personally I didn't find it difficult to get used to the action of putting the lenses in, it took 2-3 weeks or so and apart from getting one lense completely stuck up the top of my eye ( which involved a trip to A&E) managed better than I expected I would.
I can't speak for the cost or suitablilty of lenses for you any more as it was discovered after a while that I was allergic to all the solutions used in the process, even the hypoallergenic ones, so had to give up contacts altogether:(. I guess that's a personal thing for you and the optician.
It looks a lot better for you to at least try them first. The only thing that bothers me about the laser eye surgery is that I don't think it's been around long enough to know the long term effect/results yet. Maybe the opticans and Eric-Amanda on here know more??
There are lots of places to buy on line, so you can shop around as long as you have your check ups regularly.

When you say extend wear do mean mean more than a month.

Have just replaced my Uk contacts with NZ ones. I had a 45min initial appoinment for $55. This included checking my current prescription, checking my glasses prescription, photographing my eye, measuring etc.
I have monthly disposable lenses, that have to be bought in blocks of 6 months for $170, plus the cost of solutions.
