We just found a Chimney starter at Bunnings Warehouse- so no need for lighter fluid. Just put the charcoal up top, and two pieces of newspaper underneath, light them on fire and go. (We tend to let the newspaper burn, then add two more pieces of newspaper for good measure as the charcoal here doesn't seem to like to light).
I highly recommend it.

Easy, but more expensive option, is to switch to gas like everyone else in NZ! :)
If, however, you like a "proper" BBQ then I've always found the lighter cubes work pretty well but you need to make sure that the charcoal is stacked properly in a tight pyramid with a few bits of newspaper stuffed in too to make sure that the lighter cubes light properly. About 4 cubes should get it going evenly and quickly.
I've also seen someone with an attachment to a gas bottle that turns it into a Bunsen burner type of thing. You just build a pyramid of coals over the burner, turn on the gas and light it with a match. Once the coals are properly alight after 10 minutes you pull the burner out which collapses the pyramid and allows you to start cooking. They also use it to light wood fires in winter!
No idea where you would get one from as theirs was pretty ancient!

After using the BBQ again- Definitely go with a chimney starter- a one time buy and you never need lighter fluid again!

I'm also a big fan of these, just my two cents:D
