I have another panicked question about the EOI. ;) In section A, it asks for both your "main occupation" and the "main industry of the place where you work."
The main occupation question is one issue. I am agonising over which job category I should choose for myself, as it seems like this will make a huge impact on NZIS's decision. Since graduating from university I've worked as a music journalist and editor, a web design/content administrator, a newspaper advertising coordinator (dealing with art and text, not the actual sales aspect), and now currently a proofreader. I feel like these all fall within the realm of journalism/media/communications, but I'm having real trouble distilling it down into one distinct job category.
I've narrowed it down to the following options:
599913 Proof Reader - This one is the most accurate choice, as this is my current job description. (I work in the communications department of a financial firm.) However, I'm worried that this will not fulfill the "creative" part of the Creative Industries category. I'm only in this job because I wasn't able to find work with any newspapers or magazines. I still consider journalism to be my main career.
212411 Copywriter - Not quite as accurate, but more closely fits the "creative" requirement. Just worried about having to provide bylines as some sort of evidence, although I DO have clips from when I was a music journalist. They just happen to be about three years old. :laugh
212499 Journalists and Other Writers nec - Seems like the best bet, it's vague enough to cover all my bases. Just worried that they won't consider proofreading as "journalism."
THEN, of course, there's the question of the "main activity." Since I work for a financial company, I suppose I'd have to put Finance as the main industry, but again, I don't want someone looking at that and just chucking it in the bin. I can't believe that NZIS just think that every single occupation is cut and dry and if you don't fit the mould you're out...
