We are thinking of buying our son an i phone for christmas, does any one know if we will be be able to get it to work with an NZ sim card, as we are coming over in Jan and if it wont work it would be a bit of a waste of money
If anyone has had any experiance of this your advice/experience would be apreciated
Thanks in advance

If it does work it will only work on Vodafone, as telecom don't use sim cards.
I would imagine tho that so long as it is unlocked it shouldn't be a problem.
When we were visiting you could only get the iphone on a contract!

exactly right, the phone needs to be unlocked so if you buy in the uk, you will need one that has been jailbroken or pay to jailbreak yourself. as i have mentioned before, the phone is data intensive so while on a uk contract (or o2 bolt on payg) you will get all you can eat. once in nz on payg, it may prove to be costly! it may be worth looking at the ipod touch (argos sale is 135 quid for 8gb) then sort phones once in NZ

I have an iphone in new zealand. The data plans here are fine for browsing and emails but certainly not for constantly downloading music etc.
last time i checked they had not fully unlocked the iphone for other networks. They may have done it by now for the 3G.
how old is your son? maybe an ipod touch is more suitable for NZ

I think you might be right I think the Ipod touch route is the route to go down, we will just get him a phone when we get to NZ
Come to think of it he is 19 he can get his own phone!
Thanks everyone for your replies

The access point for the iphone is locked down to particular SIMS but you can crack the phone easily to get around this. Google is your friend...
