How to get an IRD number?

Hi,

I've just received a contract to sign for a job out in Auckland. If all goes well I'll be starting out there in mid March next year.

Along with the contract to sign is an IR 330 form to declare which band of income tax I'll have to pay.

The first bit of information that they require is my IRD number. Can I apply for one of these before I move out, or do I have to wait until I am in the country?

On the NZ Inland Revenue web page about applying for an IRD number it suggests I need to take my documents to an AA agent or a post office, so as we're not in the country that is not possible.

Any advice? Do I need a number now, or can I only get one once we've arrived?

Thanks as ever,

Stuart

You can't get one until you've arrived, but the whole process should only take a few minutes, so as soon as you get there you can get it out of the way and it'll be done. I did mine over the phone and they just ask you for a few bits of personal information and then give you your number right then and there.

One piece of advice though, is to ask them to send you a permanent IRD card with your number on it, because I could NEVER remember mine!

Apply as soon as you arrive and it takes about 10 days

Do it when you get here. Fill a form in, done.

Thanks everyone. Seems a shame we have to wait when it is one of those jobs we could get out of the way now before we go, but there we go. Another job on our 'to-do when we arrive' list! :)

Thanks,

Stuart

They recently changed the rules; we got ours from the States just 1.5 years ago....BTW they've changed the coins, too so if you have any money from your last stay you many have a hard time spending it on your next NZ trip!

Oh no, we just left New Zealand in July, so we've already been there for ages since the money changed. :laugh Although I arrived in September 2006, and they switched over the currency in November, so I'd only JUST started getting used to recognising the different bills and coins when they had to pull the rug out from under me again. I was well pissed off, lol...

Sorry, I got confused about how long you were away. :D
I visited NZ in Sept and had maybe $14 in old coin and no idea it had changed...the result was when I went for my 1st NZ coffee and pie in 1.5 years, the coffee girl and two customers laughed at me:o I guess they were changing over during our last visit but we never got the memo.

Hi There.....

I was under the impression that you could apply from outside NZ. I got a letter from Geneva health when I got my contract of employment. She sent me 2 IRD Number Applications and said.........

Please complete these applications and send with a copy of your birth certificate or visa pages of your passport to the address closest to your 'New New Zealand' home. We have put our address on the form, which means we will recieve your IRD numbers and will then ensure we get them to you once you arrive in NZ.
