Car buying legality

I have just bought a car, from a dealer, that comes with a 1 month warranty.

At the time of test drive, it had a warning light on the dashboard ... stupidly didn't consider it as it went off after a couple of mins. Turns out, it's an indicator that it NEEDS a service now.

Now, dealer has said they can arrange a service at my cost - this, after $5,500. Where do we stand?

I'd of expected the dealer to have done a basic service before you picked it up, you could try pointing this out.
maybe a quick call to trading standards also

Legally I don't think that you stand anywhere if you did not mention it and he did not agree to put it right. You could try and argue that it is not 'fit for purpose' under the Sale of Goods Act but I wouldn't say it's a strong case.

It is worth suggesting the dealer that he might throw in a service and that you rather expected that to be done. Either way, publish the conclusion and the dealer's name here...
