Hi guys,

I have an interview in the public sector in IT and I was just wondering if this will be much different from a private sector employer? This will be my first "proper" interview since arriving here, so I want to make sure I am prepared. Will it be very technical? Or more competency based like I've heard a lot of them are?

Thanks for your help,

Vic

I'm not in IT, but I now work in the public sector having always been in the private sector in the past. I found the interview very much based on the job description. Make sure you have that - it includes competencies, skills and responsibilities. They check for evidence in your past experience that indicates that you are likely to bring the required competencies and skills and that you'd have had similar responsibilities.

I think the type of interview may depend upon the role.

I am a software eng working in the public sector. The interview I had was very technical. I would expect a more competency type interview for a project manager etc.

I have a job in the public sector in IT, was interviewed for it in March this year. It was the lowest stress interview ever, with no technical questions asked at all. I was asked about my experience and had some very general technical questions asked, but to be honest, the interviewer talked more than me!

I guess it all depends on the interviewer, rather than public or private sector though. Good luck!

Thanks guys, just to let you know I got the job and the interview was pretty easy going, asking me questions relating to my cv and experience and how it matched the job description. The technical questions were not "what is" type questions and more like "what is your experience with xxx", so it was actually not too stressful. I start in January, am really looking forward to it. Will keep you posted,
