I am curious as to whether or not the North Island gets any fall leaf color? We're moving to the Tauranga/Papamoa area and thought we'd ask out of curiosity.

Well I guess that it should be Autumn Colour, but yes, some parts of the NI do have trees that change leaf colour before they lose them over winter.

It really depends on if there are large stands of exotic trees, like in the streets or parks. Native NZ trees are either evergreen or semi-deciduous, dropping their leaves at any time of the year even if every other tree around them is green. They also don't go very colourful. Just green to brown really.

Best autumn colour I have seen in the NI was in Hawkes Bay and up towards Opotiki. This is accentuated by droughty conditions, so colder drier places tend to have better colours. I live in Northland now and all we get is a brief show for a few days from the odd clump of poplars.

Cambridge is great for Autumn colour - and the surrounding countryside - I did a post about it earlier this year, with photos.
