Is anyone aware of problems getting PR if you are member of an employment union? We are on WTR Talent visas and will be applying for PR once the 2 year wait is up, but OH has heard that becoming a member of a union can go against you. Personally I don't see this as an immigration issue, but would like to hear your views.
Thanks

I would say that there is no truth in this at all.
We were in NZ on a WTR with my OH the principal applicant and a member of a union, and we got PR without any problems.
BTW, any reason why you are waiting 2 years, I assume that you don't have enough points?

Hello Ian,
Does this mean that if you get > 140 points , you can get PR right away or rather < 2 years

I'm very sure you can apply for PR right away - at least, that is what I will be doing! I'll be going to NZ on a work (talent) visa but will be applying for PR on my first day of work as my points will be quite high (155 if my job isn't a future growth area or area of absolute skills shortage, and 175 if it is).

There is nothing stopping anyone from applying for PR at any time if they have enough points to be selected, just because you are on a WTR does not mean that you have to wait 2 years to apply.
Of course if you don't have enough points to submit an EOI, then the only option is work on the WTR for 2 years and then apply.
We arrived on WTR then applied for PR in the first year without any problems.
IMO, getting a WTR first and then applying in NZ for PR does take longer than going straight for a PR in your home country, but they may just have been busy for us?

Thanks Ian - and your right, we don't have enough points. I think we had 60 or so, making the WTR Talent visa the perfect option for us.

Other people have already answered but AFAIK the people looking at your application will be in a trade union themselves so they won't hold it against you.

Immigration have replied - it makes no difference to them. I think the purportrator is just thinking up some silly excuse as to why they haven't joined IMHO. Some people don't think others will be able to find out correct information for themselves I guess - why not just say you don't want to become a member?
