If I've understood correctly, in 2008 New Zealand had an annual immigration 'quota' / target of 50,000. I assume this covers the calendar year (1st Jan - 31st Dec) - is that right?

As the EOI points selection threshold for those without a job offer seems recently to have dropped to 110 (in London at least) would it be correct to assume that NZIS may be a bit short of the 50,000 target?

Has the new National government given any firm indication yet of what quota are planning to set for 2009?

Cheers!
Pete.

As I understand it, and this is by no means gospel, they will be reviewing immigration numbers with a view to ensure that any Kiwis and/or NZ Residents made redundant through the current financial blip will get the best opportunity for re-employment. This suggests to me that the quota will drop.

A number of big companies are shedding staff and stopping recruiting externally while they take stock.

On the flip side, there will always be a requirement for certain skilled migrants.

The one point I am sure on is that 110 points was worldwide and not just London.
I think (not 100%) that end of year is end of May or June, because ours was processed quickly as they look to meet deadlines at that time.
It does say somewhere on NZIS when the immigration policy start date for the year is.

once you're in the system they won't change it retrospectively though will they?

hmm interesting, I hope that's the case with us, as we would ideally love to leave for NZ in June.:)

Has there been any indication from the National party as to when they intend to start replacing Labour's immigration policy / criteria with their own?

Cheers,
Pete.

Once you have your ITA then I don't think you will be effected

There's no point in me submitting an EOI under the current rules, as I won't have enough points without a job offer.

As we can't move for a year or so, we can't do anything but sit here, watching and waiting to see if the quota changes, how the criteria shift, etc.

Ho hum ... (twiddles thumbs, etc....) :uhoh

Cheers,
Pete.
