Another question about car shipping?

Is it ok to pack it full with all your "stuff" or do the shipping company charge extra if you do that?

We've just imported a car from the UK to Wellington and it was chock full of stuff - however this was only after I'd checked with our NZ agent (long story - we emigrated two years ago and back again) who said it was fine as long as all the items in the car were numbered and identified on the manifest. However I had a two week battle with our UK shipper who was adamant we couldn't fill the car at all.

I finally told him that the responsibility was completely ours, so if NZ Customs wouldn't allow the container in then that would have been our loss and of no concern to a UK shipper. Our NZ agent - The Moving Company in Wellington - have been fantastic and if you're heading to this neck of the woods I couldn't recommend them more.

If there's anything else you want to know about importing cars, let me know.

From the customs website:

It is recommended that you do not pack personal belongings in your vehicle when it is being shipped to New Zealand for the following reasons.

We had ours full of stuff, no one said anything, the only thing they wanted was a shipping list and the boxes clearly labeled. I did pack it so that nothing would move around and damage the car, but since we paid for the container, I think we could have put as much stuff in and around the car as we wanted.

We didn't use an 'agent' or a removal company, I approached the shipping company directly and their responsibility went as far as getting the container to Auckland. I did all the rest (paperwork and maf and stuff) myself.

good luck,

Daniela

We did the same. It's a fair bit cheaper and not difficult to do.

did you both have sole use of a container? we want to just take 2 bulky items so it would be shared use of container.

Yes, sole use, I don't believe the shipping companies deal in sharing. They just shift whole containers.

Yes, as Myles says, sole use. I really just contacted them, practically drove the car into the container at the port, and they then shipped the container. They wanted a shipping list with stuff in it, and that was it.

Their responsibility ended when the container got to Auckland. It was cheaper that way, but actually quite a bit of running around involved for me (and organising transport of the car, as it had to go through the AA compliance check).

Good luck,

Daniela

Can someone help? We are thinking of exporting our car from our home country to Auckland and we just wanna find out if there are any things to look out for?

We contacted an exporting car co. in Singapore and the charges were $1200 for the shipping plus $600 for admin charges+paperwork. But this is as far as getting the car to Auckland only. The rest is up to us as the co. won't be handling the paperwork on this side.

So is there anything for us to do once the car arrives in NZ? I think what we are looking for is a step-by-step approach to importing a car into NZ for dummies:p

Here's one thread about someone who did it. http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=13011 And another. http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=14357If you use the Search button above, you'll find more (some with a lot more hassle, I'm afraid).

This is an old thread now but thought I would add a little anyway...

If your car is going on a RORO (Roll On Roll Off) ferry, then I don't think you will be able to load it with your stuff. If it is going into a container, then you should be fine.

I've got a loaded car arriving from the UK this week, and am hoping that all is well when the container's seal is cracked! The agent in Christchurch is charging me something like NZ$1100 for MAF, Customs, port charges, delivery of container from Lyttleton port to their depot, blah, blah... This is on top of the £1300 (insurance, another £300) that I paid to the UK agent. On top of this will be $500 or so to get the car signed off by the AA (or whoever) and warranted and registered for NZ roads, plus, any additional costs to fix problems that the AA may identify. So you are looking at NZ$5000-$6000 to bring in a car from the UK, in a container... If you are going to do it, do your research and bring a car that is a bit special and worth more in NZ. Also, make sure you have owned said car for at least 12 months, or you will be paying some GST/duty on it too.
