Can someone please tell me how to get an IRD number in Christchurch? I went to the IRD website but confused. I need step by step instructions:D Thanks.

We went to an AA shop and they did it all for us. They can also do an express service as well.

The post shop will do it too for you as long as you have all the photo copies of the ID documents ready.

OH got his done in the AA shop here in Auckland. Which reminds me, I need to get one :exit

Post shop or AA will have the forms and such you need.
I think you can specify urgent if you need to (you can get paid while it is pending but they will take more out of the paycheck) or call up IRD to get your number over the phone. Otherwise it takes about 2 weeks. (Well, took my OH about 10 days in ChCh).
