Christmas tree disposal

Now that Christmas is over, how do I dispose of the tree? (We're in Wellington.) Is there any kind of recycling/mulching program? Can I just put it out on the curb for the normal rubbish pick up?

Thanks,
Keith

Unfortunately there's no curbside tree recycling in Welly; you have to take the tree to the Southern Landfill on Happy Valley Road (near Island Bay) if you want to recycle it.

I don't know if you can put it out for normal rubbish pick up; I don't remember seeing any trees out on the curbs last year. I'm not sure though, as we're lucky to have a neighbor with a small shredder so we borrowed that & turned the branches into mulch (the trunk got stuck in a corner of the garden where it will eventually compost I hope!)

Drive to the landfill, tell them you are dropping off green waste, and they'll send you to the far end of the road. Your car will be weighed going in an out, and you'll pay a fee based on the difference - the minimum $4 charge will cover the largest tree you can find.
