Hi,
Since i'll be moving soon, I've been thinking about what I should take with me. I'm looking at everyday items that may not be available easily in NZ or may be a tad difficult to find when you are new there.
I'm putting down a few things that have come to mind.
ok... here goes -
1. Spices/ masalas - garam masala, curry powder (for Indian cooking)
2. Take an extra piece of your favorite lipstick/gloss in case that colour/brand is not available in NZ
3. A couple of travel adaptors - for charging you mobile or using your hair dryer
4. clothes (obviously) :laugh
5. Shoes - can be a bit expensive :yes
Please to add to this list! I hope it will be helpful to everyone making the move! I know it sure will help me!!!:yes :)

Do you mean: to bring over with your luggage? or as part of your belongings/container?

Books are also very expensive in NZ, so if you can't part with your favorite novel...bring it, too.

If there's something that you love and must have, bring it with you.
We brought our hi-tech foam pillows with us as well as blankets and we're glad we did. :)

Will you be allowed to take them in? I've rather assumed that I can't take them
We're thinking:
favourite tea bags
cadbury chocolate
My Costco membership runs out next month so I need to think about what to stock up on before it does (no point renewing it). So I need to check NZ prices of stuff like dishwasher tablets etc.

If you suffer hayfever, antihistamines by the crate. Same for indegestion tablets .. very expensive here.
Oh, and stock up on comfy, casual shoes and clothes.

The bags that we've packed already are full of antihistamines, painkillers, and cold medicine. I'm also planning on taking little kitchen gadgets like our grater, garlic press, good knives, etc. They're small and light and expensive to replace.

So you can pack lots of medicines (antihistamines etc) in your container?
Or is it easier to take as hand luggage?

I'm talking about anything. whether you bring it in your container or carry it with you in your luggage. What is it that you were glad you brought along with you?

I agree medicines are a very good idea to carry. But how much can one carry and do you need prescriptions for regular paracetamol or cold and indigestion tablets?
Will you be allowed to take them in? I've rather assumed that I can't take them.
I believe you can bring in spices as long as they are in unopened tins and you declare them!
Please correct me if I'm wrong!!!
Anything else anyone wished they brought with them or is grateful they brought with them?

If you are landing at Dubai, they have become very strict about codeine (I think?) in your hand luggage.
There is a thread about it somewhere but I'm sure Ian will point you in the right direction :D

Brilliant tips, everyone!
We're only allowed 20kgs checked baggage each, so we're at present trying to decide which things we really don't want to part with - we have no container, only half a dozen boxes which we'll ship - three of those are already bulging with books! :)
As to special stuff: I'm planning on stocking up on the facial stuff I use as its an SA made brand that isn't available in NZ. Apart from that, tea is a great idea (I drink decaff). I'm also planning to ship an old Persian carpet and a 100% down duvet - hope MAF won't have a problem with either of these! And my daughter is very reluctant to leave her collection of soft toys behind, so I foresee a bit of a struggle there ... :laugh

I've been doing a lot of reading and have found that spectales can be quite expensive in NZ - around NZ$300!! so would be a good idea to bring along a spare and of course your prescription as a visit to the optometrist is also expensive! :yes

If you go to the doctor and get a prescription for antihistamines they will cost you $3 for 90 tablets :D

Or you could just have a prescription for your glasses so you can buy them at www.zennioptical.com or www.39dollarglasses.com and have them shipped anywhere in the world! I just got glasses for 3 kids, including shipping, for $100 Canadian. My sister orders to NZ with no problems too.

Plenty of travel adaptors. It amazes me how many of my UK electrical bits and bobs have built in adaptors so I can't just change the plug.......

It's worth bringing a couple of those 4-way extension cables; just change the plug when you get to NZ and you have 4 UK sockets to plug stuff into.

Having commenced the decorating/nesting stage of the journey I would suggest wallpaper! Unbelievable prices here, when I think about the cheap rolls in B&Q and I'm paying on average $35 per roll :exit
