Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm on a working holiday and my wife is a NZ citizen. We are ready to start the process of getting my permit switched from a working holiday to a 1 year work permit based on our marriage. Does anyone know if I can do this within NZ or do I have to go back to California to start the process? and If I can do this in NZ how long will it take? What has been your experience when changing permits in NZ. I don't think it will take very long because I'm not applying for PR just wanting to change permit & is there a interview etc... Thanks.

You should just be able to fill out the forms, the work permit form for you and the sponsorship form for your wife and drop them in the box at immigration. They told me mine would take 9 months but it only took a few weeks. (I had a work permit based on my OH's work permit but it is the same form and basic process)

Im going through the exact process you are right now. Me and my NZ partner were in the states when we started the process. In the mean time he has went back to NZ.

NZ embassy did request that I get medicals done and by the information you have provided I think that you will as well, it depends how long you have been in NZ. So make sure you go through the paperwork accordingly. You will also have to provide a police certificate from you home country. You are only able to lodge the application while the two of you are currently living together. I verified this with immigration today. Which means Ill be flying to auckland to submit my paperwork there while we are both on the same soil. : )
