Right then, lets kick off on the right foot.
Everyone heading to Palmerston North and environs, make yourselves known!
This here thread is for the Palmy kids, so fire away.
Dave & Sandra, Moorf...........come on down!!

Sorry P.Boy, I'm a Chch chick !

Dave & Sandra
25th August 2004, 08:47 AM
I'll be there soon :P flight booked for 21st September and my cat will be arriving 2 days before me. The excitement is INTENSE!!!!!!!!! I just have to hope I like the house Dave will have bought by this Friday. I'm 8) really I am.

Moorf
25th August 2004, 12:12 PM

*clunk clink every trip*

Pakeha Boy
25th August 2004, 09:46 PM
Sorry Moorf, thought I'd read somewhere that you were palmy bound?
So tell me, whats ChCh got that PN ain't?
I know its gets bloody cold, way down there in the southern climes, unlike the sunny Manawatu!!
Not too late to change yer mind you know! ;)

Dave & Sandra, sounds like you're having the time of your lives already,
What made you pick Fielding, just the job? :clap
Whats the average price of a house around there? $150,000 or so?

Moorf
25th August 2004, 10:59 PM
:laugh Pakeha Boy - you never know - we are taking time out to visit north island and see if we might like it there - nothing is fixed as yet so we may be PN bound yet!

I guess if I knew where it was it would help!!

Moorf
26th August 2004, 12:37 AM
Just flicked through my guide book and P.North is nowhere near where I expected to find it !! I had it in my mind that it was north of Auckland *doh*

Looks like a lovely rural area though - definitely worth investigating!

Pakeha Boy
26th August 2004, 01:27 AM
Well then, check this site out......

http://www.ourregion.co.nz

What line of work are you in? Palmy is a pretty big city and has loads on offer.
Besides that, I don't hear any pig islanders from Chch trying to tempt you down there????
(surely that'll get a reaction! :eek )

Dave & Sandra
26th August 2004, 10:46 AM
Well Moorf you'll have us to visit if you come Palmy way.
:clap

PB - I'm not there yet

It's my husband that's done all the buying of houses stuff, against my better judgement, but I do like the look of the house. Plus he splashed out a bit more than I was planning - $270,000 to be precise. I had been thinking about the $150,000 region because I got a real estate paper when I was there and reckoned that we would be spending that for a nice little 3 bedroomed place :? He just liked the look of Feilding and wanted more for his $ than he/we would have in PN.

26th August 2004, 11:26 AM
I am Palmy-bound as well. Just purchased a very small but tidy 3 bedroom in town. I will arrive in Auckland on Jan 5 (hopefully with residency by then :hopeso ). I plan to hang around Auckland and do some touring around the country, arriving in Palmy sometime in Feb. after we collect our 4 pets from quarantine in Auckland. Can't wait! :P

Moorf
26th August 2004, 01:21 PM
Pakeha B - we'll be looking for I.T work for my hubby - if push comes to shove I'll go back into marketing but I'm looking for a change :D Any bookshops for sale there????!

Pakeha Boy
26th August 2004, 06:39 PM
Moorf, there was a cracking little bookshop for sale in Marton (40min from PN) for sale when I visited last year. $20,000 lock stock & barrel!

Moorf
27th August 2004, 04:45 AM
:eek Saw one in Chch recently for $35k!!

But the stock was porn mags!!! If it's still for sale I guess I could auction them on here :laugh :laugh

That internet cafe deal is really getting under my skin!
Does anyone know if Palmerston North has got any? Or fielding for that matter?
Last time in NZ 18 months ago, I spent a month tripping around the North Island and have to admit to not seeing any at all', 'course, not that i was looking out for them either.........

Dave & Sandra
29th August 2004, 02:57 AM
I think I remember seeing 3 internet shops in PN and I think one may have been a cafe. The one that I went into to check out our e-mail was just a shop with PC's and not very inviting. Definitely scope for improvement.

There are probably a lot more with it being a Uni city.

Don't know about Feilding yet.

Pakeha Boy
29th August 2004, 04:36 AM
Hmmm, getting quite interesting innit!

The old timers would already know about the following link, but what the hell, here it is again. Some semi-interesting reading on the good ol' Manawatu.

MelissaG, while I think of it, what breed of dog is it that you're bringing in?

Pakeha Boy
4th September 2004, 11:52 PM
Here is some a link to some really neat photos. The Wanganui River photos in particular really light my candles!
The rest of the world can blow itself to bits and you'd never know.
No TV, no radio, no phones, no computers, no phoney Blair smiles, no phoney Bush posing, no Eminem, no crazy drugged up kids with guns, no muslim extremists sawing western heads off with rusty machetes.............ummm, lemme think about this a sec

So, who else is coming??? :nice1

Dave & Sandra
5th September 2004, 03:52 AM
Brilliant photos PB. :nice1

Just to think I will soon be living near such beautiful scenery - certainly surpasses anything in Cheshire, England.

Not many people owning up to moving to Manawatu - maybe your 'Mafia' bit put people off - they probably think it's something to do with drug barons. :laugh

Hi, about the internet cafe. In October 2003 I traveled from Auckland via the coast to Gisborne, Napier, through the middle, to Auckland and all the way to the North beach. I saw at least one internet cafe at every little town I stopped at.
Thought you might like to know.

Pakeha Boy
10th September 2004, 06:59 AM
Thanks Junnifer.
I'm now thinking such a great idea is yesterdays news.
Next original idea anyone??

Moorf, I think the idea is to attract customers, not make them run away screaming in horror!

Moorf
10th September 2004, 08:24 AM
So you don't think a large Cucumber mascot-man wandering Cathedral Square in Christchurch would work? :uhoh

Timbo
10th September 2004, 10:21 AM
Moorf. Stop it at once. We all know what happened the last time Cucumbers were mentioned. :laugh :laugh

It would work great... at convincing people to move to Dunedin or Nelson instead. :angel

Have you ever tried eating an apple-cucumber?
They grow them on the other side of the Gorge, and loads of roadside stalls sell them.
Bloody tasty. They're a cross between an apple and a uummmmm - well, cucumber, actually!
Them Hawkes Bay folk didn't have much to do in the old days, other than sitting in the long grass in the sun, looking at apples and cucumbers and thinking "I wonder what would happen if I...."
What a life, I'm gonna do some of that soon y'know, grass and sun and stuff :nice1

Hi All,

My family will be heading to Palmy sometime in Oct / Nov 2005. We just have been told that our ITA is in the post. Stayed in Palmerston from 1988 - 1991 (studied at Massey) and loved the experience and that is why bringing my family to this beautiful part of the world.

For those in Palmy, maybe you can update me of what is happening there as I have lost touch for the past 14 years.

Thanks.

Vincent

Vincent

Yesterday, according to my sister in law (who lives just outside PN), the only thing that's happening much at the moment is rain, wind, more rain, abit more wind, and then it rains again and they're still having to light the fire. Looks like we'll be arriving in a typical Manawatu summer.

You'll notice a huge change to how PN was 13 years ago, brighter city centre, lots of cafe bars, flash shops and not so many old clapped out cars on the streets. It really is a lovely place to be (unless you're into sun worship).

I can confirm all that Diny said about the weather - it is awful right now. Rained nearly all weekend - gale force winds all last week. There was some sunshine today but still not very warm. Even the locals are complaining and saying it looks as though they're not going to have a summer again this year. :wah

As I've only lived near Palmy for just over 2 months, (I'm in Feilding) I can't really compare it with 14 years ago, but I think it's a good place to be. Cinema, theatre, cafes, restaurants, nice shops - everything you need really.

You are not alone in this weather thing, it has been the same down in Chch too. looking better today.

Diny
7th December 2004, 08:06 AM
When I spoke to sis in law yesterday we discovered that it was warmer here in the UK early winter than it was in the Manawatu early summer. :?

I promise I will keep an open mind regarding the NZ climate (although I've never experienced anything other than 'average'). :hopeso

Isn't MelissaLG doing that as well - I'm sure she's going to train to be a vet. She already has a house in Palmy. You two should get together.

Don't forget that my cat - Moxie will need a vet one day :laugh

Sandra

Yep, you are right Sandra! Good memory! I actually saw one of Sweetpea's posts on another thread and thought she might be headed to vet school as well, so I dropped her a note. A shame we won't be going through at the same time, but still neat to know that there is someone else out there like me who is giving it a go! Still no ITA for us, but regardless we are on our way soon. The shippers have been and gone, so its just a matter of having Xmas with the family and then getting on a plane a few days later. See you all in a couple of months!

Hello there, we will be visiting Palmerston March-April time I have an interview for a job at the airfield (did you ever realise its hard to type with your fingers crossed) what sort of weather can we expect. Where are the best schools for a sport mad 10 year old. Dave

Dave

How long's a piece of string? :laugh

I was staying just outside Palmerston North in April 2003 and we had great weather, warm enough for t-shirts but carried a sweatshirt with us for the cooler moments. Very pleasant.

We stayed there April 2004 aswell ......... it was blooming freezing (oh God especially the houses but that's a different thread).

My in-laws live in Marton and my sister in law lives in Ashhurst. One day they will report fab weather, warm sunny and clear, the next day they'll report lashing rain, wind and very cold temps.

Take your pick. What's that they say about NZ getting 4 seasons in one day?

Welcome to the forum by the way.

I'm resurrecting this thread because the Manawatu Mafia seems to have gone to pieces :eek :eek :eek

Anyone we haven't heard from lately going to Palmerston North, Feilding, Bulls, Marton, etc.?

Anyone heard from MelissaLG?

Dave & Sandra, any local updates on your beautiful house or on general Feilding goings on?

Cheers,

Laura

Yay! The mafia is growing.

I'll be living somewhere within 20 minutes drive of Massey, hopeful in a rural spot, starting in early February. (Before that I'll be touring NZ in a sleepervan.)

Diny

Caven
5th September 2005, 01:00 AM
Good for shopping, how true is that? Only today I slept in to be awoken by a $1300 dog! I slept, they bought, I nearly fell out of bed. He is nice though, a tiny thing, a bit like an Ewok. I'm not sure of the breed but they call them Poms for short(!).

Hello all, been ages since I was in here and its good to see most peeps stuck around, even if I didn't. Busy busy busy.

Does anyone want a furry Pom? Dirt cheap, just $1400? Only kidding.
