Back in June last year we signed up to the services of a major Migration Bureau (not sure whether it's ok to mention their name, so I'll just refer to them as MB, PM me if you want to know who they are).
This was before I'd come across this forum, and based on the experiences of my parents who used a Consultancy in Holland to get their Business Visa. We talked about it alot, read through all their brochures and charges and decided to sign on the dotted line. After all, we're only intending to make this migration journey once, and we'd need the experience and knowledge of professionals to get there. Or so we thought :no Also, the MB we used offered the services of it's sister company - a recruitment company, to help find the desired Job Offer. Turned out it was a one man band operation, working part-time for the MB in question :eek

As time went by, I/we gained so much knowledge about the whole process simply by reading the NZIS site, this site and other links. Soon every time we were contacted by MB (by e-mail, letter or phone) they were telling us things we had already found out ourselves.

To start things of we paid them £850, half of which was put towards their 1st invoice, half was kept as a deposit and would be used towards the final invoice. On a regular monthly interval we started to get invoices from them (time to sit down if you're not already). First one £659 for a variety of what I call admin tasks like setting up our file, assigning a consultant, sending us some standard letters, a couple of phone calls - and that's more or less it. Further ones followed, IMO mainly for admin tasks rather than adding any value. In total we've been charged £1090 :eek :eek

We put together and submitted our EOI ourselves in Sept, and asked them to check it. No changes were made. Put together and submitted our ITA ourselves, no checking this time.

We have just come out of a dispute with them, and have now totally terminated our agreement with them. We're awaiting the return of our deposit, which after reluctantly paying their final invoice should be around £370

All I can say is: What an absolute waste of money, how stupid / green were we :no :no :no

Some of you may feel you had value added by the MB you've used to realise your dreams. If so, I'm really pleased for you. We might as well have thrown our money down the toilet.

If you're toying with the idea of using an MB - IMO unless you need a Business Case all anwers can be found within this Forum and through the experiences shared by all the wonderful 'forumites' :nice1

Babette,

Sorry to hear you've had such a bad time with them. :no I originally toyed with the idea of using an immigration consultant but thankfully decided against it. I know the process is daunting and you can quite easily rack up a considerable amount of hours reseaching before and during the process but I for one am pleased that I chose that path. KNOWLEDGE is GOOD.

I do know as you say, other forum members that have also had major trouble with consultants, their fees and what they actually do to earn your hard earned £'s.
Put it down to a lesson learnt, albeit a very expensive one.

I have to agree 100% Babette. My situation with regard to the agent we were using is pretty well documented on this forum.
I have a date in the small claims court for April 5th to try and get the remainder of our deposit back.
PM me if you want details.
Some time very soon, if not already, NZIS are bringing in a code of practise for these agents. However, it remains to be seen how it is going to effect the companys based here, who presumably answer to UK law, not NZ.

Cheers Timbo & Bubbles

The MB we used is a member of the NZAMI so we thought there would already be some legislation or code of practice in place. In our experience though the only interest they have is making as much money out of us as possible. Tougher legislation - bring it on we say :clap

I am sorry you guys have had trouble during an already challenging process.

Not so seriously:
Ahem, Babette - some of us have the user name 'MB' and feel terribly, terribly slighted and hurt by this whole thread. :laugh
I don't know. If it's not danpoll calling me paranoid, it's you making me paranoid. :laugh :laugh :nice1
I'm kidding, of course. Keep on using the useful abbreviation - it works well.

Cheers,
Matt.

Sorry Matt, MB just seemed the logical abbreviation - didn't think of your username :?

I totally agree. We have paid about £2,500 and I could have done it all - and quicker. Often we knew things they did not. They said the price included all sorts of help in getting things sorted over there. The actual help consists of putting "selected" shipping companies, airlines, etc. in touch with us to sell to us. I was against using them in the first place and sad to say (for my purse) I was right.
YOU CAN DEFINATELY DO YOUR OWN APPLICATIONS WITHOUT PROBLEMS!

Babette, I'm shocked by the amount of money these people charge. I can imagine how you - and others - must be feeling.

I strongly believe that the more people who find forums like this will realise early on in the game that they can do it themselves.

What a miserable and expensive lesson you've had to learn. i think this calls for a consolation drink next saturday - don't you?

Just to add my 2 pen'eth

We were on the verge of signing up with an agency when I found this forum.

I personally can't thank everyone on here enough for their help and advice.

It's directly due to a fellow forumite's help that my hubby now has a job waiting for him in Auckland!

Places such as this are an absolute godsend when you need to talk things over with someone who's in the same boat as you. The agencies at the end of the day are only out to make money from you - that's it, bottom line.

The people on this forum are just FAB. They have restored my faith in human kindness big time.

:yes :yes :yes :yes :yes :yes :yes :yes :yes :yes :yes :yes :yes

To be fair, I do still believe that agents have a part to play for some people. In particular, those wanting to obtain either business or investment visas.
We were originally trying for the Long term business visa (on the advice of the agent), and this should have been where they earned there keep. It did not work out for us, but thats not to say others would not find them usefull.
