we have rented a 6 berth for our recce and were wondering if you can store your suitcases anywhere on board or whether its better to take large holdalls thus restricting the amount of stuff we can take but more easily stowable?

Big suitcases could be a bit of a pest in a camper, you might be able to put them up above the cab (if it's a Luton style body) during the day but you'd still have to move them at night. The hold-all solution sounds better OR maybe see if the rental people will let you leave the cases behind and unpack them into your camper.
Just a couple of thoughts.

may make a hybrid solution following the advice and pack holdalls in the suitcases to tfr to once out of hotel and into RV!

Been there, done that. Soft bags every time from now on. There are no cubby holes that will fit a suitcase even if it does hold the soft bags. After a few days of playing musical chairs with the suitcase you will get pretty sick of it.
